About Literacy Programme
Education is a fundamental human right. It is the key to sustainable development, peace and stability within and among nations and an indispensable means for effective participation in the societies and in economies of the twenty-first century. The constitution of the Islamic republic of Pakistan enjoins upon the state to eradicate illiteracy and provide universal compulsory free education up-to secondary level within minimum possible period. We are the signatory of World declaration on education for all which took place at a conference on education for all at Jomtien, Thailand, from 5-9 March, 1990. This was subsequently reaffirmed in the World education forum at Dakar, Senegal, from 26-28 April, 2000, where participants committed to achieving EFA goals and targets for every citizen and for every society.
Pakistan is also committed to the Millennium Development goals according to which by the year 2015 children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of Primary schooling.
The Government of the Punjab, giving special emphasis to this problem, decided to better focus on it by establishing on 30-08-2002 a separate Department called the Literacy & NFBE Department.
