Job Description

Background: IDRAC is a well reputed development research and training organization and always appreciates the services of qualified, knowledgeable and competent professionals (men and women). The Institute wants to recruit a highly potential person for the post of Research Assistant. The research & advocacy assistant will be responsible to assist the Lead Researcher for in-hand research, advocacy and training activities with the human rights and development organizations (National and INGOs in particular). He/she is supposed to write down or the facilitate lead researcher in writing down research proposals, collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and document it in organized and impressive manner. At times it might require Urdu translation or original work in Urdu language as well.

The Research Assistant is assumed to have at least basic minimum knowledge of proposal writing, research design, project development, planning and implementation with an ability to analyze and interpret primary or secondary data. An impressive level of report writing, communication and presentation skills with a reasonable know how of social and economic issue of Pakistan, if in place, is highly appreciated. In addition the capability to make decisions and resolve problems; self-motivation and the drive to work carefully without day to day supervision is expected and admired. Strong conceptual and technical understanding is part of the day to day task handled by IDRAC in routine.

The broader tasks and responsibilities you are supposed to handle are as under:

v Write consultancy proposals and facilitate in writing proposals;

v Collect organize and analyze data as per requirement of the research;

v Translate certain documents from English to Urdu and Urdu to English if and when required;

v Handle day to day correspondence and communication including letters, emails or meetings in person;

v Design appropriate research methodologies, if and when required;

v Collect data if and when desired by or assigned by the lead Researcher ;

v Document and analyze research data, as assigned by Lead Researcher;

v Surf the web to collect and organize the relevant and required secondary data for a particular research;

v Develop diagrams, pie charts, graphs and charts, as and if required;

v Editing and formatting a document and/of the research report, if and when required;

v Designing and implementing Advocacy and Campaigning Skills will also be considered as an asset;

v Responsibly and carefully handle any other relevant tasks as assigned by the head of IDRAC and particularly by the ‘Coordinator Research and Training’.

Skills

Required Qualifications:

A master’s degree in Development Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, public policy, statistics, NGO management or Human Rights will be the first choice. However experienced individuals from other disciplines shall also be considered. Minimum 2 to 3 years of experience in a social research institute or in a national and international NGO is desirable. Knowledge of SPSS and Urdu language (writing and translation skills) will be an asset though not a bar to apply. Academically, he holds degrees in ‘Governance and Development Management (University of Birmingham, United Kingdom)’ and ‘Human Rights Policy and Practice (University of Tromso, Norway and University of Roehampton, London)’ and is an active member of various human rights and development networks such as Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Youth Human Rights Initiative (YHRI) and Insaani Haqooq Ittehad (IHI) in the country and abroad. IDRAC’s Research Associates include Muhammad Sajjad who is an M. Phil in Public Policy and Government Studies and has been engaged with several tasks of social research and Development for the last 4 years. Noor-ul-Sabah is our Gender and Women Rights Research Associate. More than once she has handled several massive research tasks of the UNICEF, UNFPA and several tasks of I/NGOs regarding Gender Audit, Gender Based Budgeting and Gender Equity Analysis. Hayat Khan, holds the Doctoral Degree in Anthropology and is a Professor of Sociology at the Degree College Swat. The distinguished Dr. Inam Laghari, the Professor of Anthropology at Quaid-e-Azam University is also associated with IDRAC as a research advisor. Similarly, since its inception Professor Sajid Awan the head of the National Institute of Pakistan Studies (NIPS) at Quaid-e-Azam University, is associated with us.
