Background

The research project ‘entitled Creating Opportunities through Mentoring, Parental Involvement and Safe Spaces (COMPASS) will generate dynamic learning to strengthen the evidence base on the most effective interventions that address violence against adolescent girls in humanitarian crises.

This research will include a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches to establish a foundation for good programming that supports adolescent girls’ safe and healthy transition into adulthood, to improve prevention and response to violence against adolescent girls in humanitarian context in Pakistan’s KP and FATA, for adolescent girls, ages 12 to 19.

This project includes a robust research agenda to generate knowledge on effective and supportive responses for adolescent girls in humanitarian contexts where they are largely invisible and under-served.

We are seeking a back translator to support the learning process, specifically in translating enquiry tools from Roman Pashto to Urdu. The translator will report directly to Research Officer in the Research Unit WPE and ultimately to Senior Research Officer, and be tasked with the translations of Questionnaires and Consent Forms within the allotted time frame.

Responsibilities:

The translator will be responsible for:

1. Producing back translations and Roman Pashto text to Urdu, following the original document format

  • Content accuracy includes detailed comparison of content, facts and figures and making sure there are no oversights from the source
  • Reproducing as precisely as possible the meaning.
  • Using natural and simple forms of the target language (Urdu) in a way that is appropriate for the kind of text being translated and the target group.
  • Expressing all aspects of the meaning in a way that is easily understandable to the target audience.

2. Ensuring Urdu language excellence and proofreading, including vocabulary, expression and grammar as well as all relevant terminology.

3. Ensuring quality check and proofreading of translation and that written errors are left in the final drafts of translated documents.

4. The assignment will be done remotely and will be submitted in hands at office.

5. The translator is obligated to work within the required deadlines and be available to Research unit WPE for comments, corrections and for reconciliation meeting on final daft.

The translation submitted to the IRC under this TOR is the property of the IRC and cannot be submitted, distributed to or used by any other party, unless with a prior written permission from the IRC.

Details of tools and consent forms content:

The survey questionnaire is around 4400 words and about 11 pages. Three consent form are around 3757 words and about 6 pages.

Deliverables and Timeline

The consultant will be responsible for the following deliverables over an anticipated period of six days (6). Specific deadlines will be start form the day of signing of MOUs.

Quality Assurance

To ensure quality control, the consultant will be expected to participate in briefing meetings with the IRC as needed to monitor the progress of the assignment and to ensure the timelines are met. The Consultant shall make itself available to the IRC as when desired by the Client to review and discuss the progress.

Mode of Payment

The payment for rendering the services will be linked with the deliverables and shall be released after completion and acceptance of quality work by IRC Research team. Tax will be deducted as per Govt. policy.

Skills

Qualifications:

· Excellent knowledge of Urdu and Pashto; excellent Pashto language and communication skills (level of Native speaker)
· Degree or concentration in specific subject matter (i.e. human development, social sciences, health, gender studies, public health, psychology, etc.) OR 2+ years of working experience in relevant field (women’s empowerment, GBV, public health, psychology, women or adolescent health, RH/FP, etc.) and/or translating in field above as an in-house or full-time freelance translator preferred.
· Understanding of women and adolescent girls experiences
· Degree or equivalent certification in translation preferred
· Demonstrated experience in translations from Pashto to Urdu/English or Urdu to Pashto for clients such as research institutes, Human rights organizations, international organizations, translation services or other translation users.
