Program Background Summary: Pakistan Reading Project (PRP) is five year USAID funded project starting in June 2013 to support the provincial and regional Departments of Education (DoE) throughout Pakistan to improve reading skills of at least 1.3 million children in grade one and two. The project will achieve this goal through three major but interrelated initiatives that are working together to affect the quality of primary education, teacher education, policy reforms, and community engagement to re-establish a national culture of reading in Pakistan. The result will be improved reading and assessment of 23,800 teachers in 23,800 public schools with improved skills in teaching reading; 3,649 scholarships for ADE and B.Ed (Hons) students; and mobile bus libraries reaching out to 300 communities. PRP anticipates that 2.5 million children will be able to read at a level commensurate with standards at their grade level.
Job Overview/Summary:
PRP is looking to create a pool of qualified Pakistani education researchers who will be hired on short term basis to conduct research on different aspects of the program. Research topics will vary depending on the reading intervention which is being studied at a certain time. The following is a possible list of research topics that are to be investigated by PRP.
· Teachers’ implementation of the reading interventions at the school level
· Teachers’ beliefs about teaching reading to small children
· Cost effectiveness of different reading interventions
· Use of technology for improving reading in classrooms
· Use of libraries and their impact on reading habits of children
· Reading instruction support for remote school
· Policy improvement in reading
· Others
Most research studies involve working with schools and teachers in ICT, KPK, Balochistan, GB, AJK and Sindh.
This position involves working as a short term member of the PRP team, contributing to a process of improving the research design, and taking the lead in conducting the research as specified by PRP.
Major Responsibilities:
· Liaising with PRP to get an in depth understanding of the nature of the research to be carried out;
· Refining research objectives;
· Assisting in the design and improvement of research questionnaires so that most relevant information could be collected;
· Advising PRP on the most appropriate method of research, which may involve the use of quantitative and/or qualitative methods and may include both pilot and development work;
· Using a varied research techniques to gather relevant information, including document analysis, surveys, case studies and interviews (face-to-face, telephone and online);
· Gathering information by directing or carrying out fieldwork;
· Assist PRP in developing and testing theories;
· Analyzing and evaluating research and interpreting data, making sure that key issues are identified and documented;
· Preparing results;
· Presenting and disseminating research results, both orally and in writing;
Offering research-based briefings and advice, which may involve writing action plans;

Job Requirements:
Education: Master’s degree or above (Ph.D. preferred)

The USAID-funded Pakistan Reading Project, implemented by the International Rescue Committee and its partners (Creative Associates International, World Learning, and Institute of Rural Management), is a seven-year project (2013-2020) with the objective to support the provincial and regional departments of education throughout Pakistan to improve reading skills of 1.3 million children in grades one and two. The project will achieve this goal through three distinct but interrelated components that will work in synergy to affect the quality of early grade education: Improved classroom learning environment for reading, Improved policies and systems for reading, and Improved community based support for reading in Pakistan.
