Organizational Context:
Set up in 1985 by leading British Muslim organizations, Muslim Aid supports projects in over 50 countries spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe. By responding quickly to emergencies, Muslim Aid provides relief to the victims of natural disasters, war and famine. Muslim Aid also deploys long-term development projects on child development, education, skills training, provision of clean water and healthcare to tackle the root causes of poverty.
During emergencies, women have unique health concerns, from hygiene needs to life threatening complications related to pregnancy, child birth, with increased risk of rape and sexually transmitted diseases, unsafe abortions and obstetrical complications. Reproductive health interventions for communities affected by natural disasters require special knowledge and skills. Studies have shown that there are adverse reproductive health issues following disasters, which includes early pregnancy loss, premature delivery, still births and delivery-related complications. Pregnant and lactating women may not have access to necessary health care and food supplements Women and girls also often confront discrimination and gender based violence in the aftermath of disasters.
Muslim Aid has signed an agreement with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to conduct series of trainings on Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) for Reproductive Health in Emergencies and Clinical Management of Rape Survivors (CMRS) for both government and non-governmental organizations. In 2015, these trainings will be organized for both medical and non-medical practitioners in three provincial capitals such as Lahore, Punjab, Karachi, Sindh and Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa / FATA. UNFPA has conducted 4 similar trainings in 2014 for the first line responders at the national, provincial and district level. These trainings are significant as it would enable the relevant partners to be better prepared to address RH issues during emergencies. These trainings will also be made sustainable through utilizing accredited Government officials at NHEPRN for facilitating the trainings in provinces. A pool of trainers will be developed and maintained to roll out provincial and district level trainings, advocate for the inclusion of SRH in provincial and district disaster management plans and health plans and work to integrate and implement Reproductive Health services as a standard during preparedness, response and recovery.
