Program Background Summary:

Pakistan Reading Project (PRP) is five year USAID funded project starting in June 2013 to support the provincial and regional Departments of Education (DoE) throughout Pakistan to improve reading skills of at least 1.3 million children in grade one and two. The project will achieve this goal through three major but interrelated initiatives that are working together to affect the quality of primary education, teacher education, policy reforms, and community engagement to re-establish a national culture of reading in Pakistan. The result will be improved reading and assessment of 23,800 teachers in 23,800 public schools with improved skills in teaching reading; 3,649 scholarships for ADE and B.Ed (Hons) students; and mobile bus libraries reaching out to 300 communities. PRP anticipates that 2.5 million children will be able to read at a level commensurate with standards at their grade level.

Job Overview/Summary:

PRP is developing variety of learning and teaching materials for early grades reading development for grades 1 and 2 in Pakistan. Consultant illustrator will be working in close coordination and collaboration with the materials development team to illustrate all learning and teaching materials for students and teachers in schools.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Illustrator is required to illustrate students, teachers and other materials in Urdu, Sindhi and Pashto described below:

Scope of illustration/photographic work includes Big Books, Lesson Plan books, Work Books, TIG teachers’ materials, Flash Cards and others as required. Please see details as follows:

a. Lesson Plan Books: Completing Illustration, sketches and photos as required on daily and weekly basis as agreed with the writers and Materials Development Coordinator

b. Workbooks: Completing Illustration, sketches and photos as required on daily and weekly basis as agreed with the writers and Materials Development Coordinator

c. TIG modules: Completing Illustration, sketches and photos as required on daily and weekly basis as agreed with the writers and Materials Development Coordinator

d. Flash and picture cards: Completing Illustration, sketches and photos as required on daily and weekly basis as agreed with the writers and Materials Development Coordinator

e. Other roles and responsibilities:

i. Taking Photographs of required images and objects (in-door and out-doors) that may need traveling as required. PRP will provide transportation if and as required and needed.

ii. As required, assist in completion of big books (8 pages each). Two to three books to be completed each week.

iii. As required, assist Lesson Plan Book Illustrations/ sketches on weekly basis (agreed number of sketches per week with materials team)

iv. As required, assist Workbook Illustration/ sketches on weekly basis (agreed number of sketches per week with materials

Job Requirements:

· Education: At least Intermediate.

· Work Experience:

1. She/he should have creative skills in art and design to communicate a story, message or idea.

  1. Ability to illustrate characters, environments and concepts on paper and digitally.
  2. Strong portfolio that comprises of cartoon work, characters, caricatures, environments etc.

· Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

1. Must be a quick and good sketcher of children illustrations/books

2. Must know various styles, media and techniques suitable for children and teachers materials for early grades

3. Must be a team player and follow art briefs from various writers and editors

4. Must be able to work under pressure and deliver on time without compromising quality

5. Must be familiar with children psychology, likings, disliking of colors and styles

6. Must be familiar and sensitive to cultural and gender issues in children, teaching and learning materials specifically to various regions of Pakistan

· Language Skills:

Reading, writing, speaking and good understanding of Urdu, Sindhi, Pashto and English desired but not required.
