POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for designing, implementing and supporting mission critical systems related to server hardware and software, storage, data backups and server security.

Provides effective resolution and systematic improvements for complex issues affecting SNL systems. Responsibilities include technical leadership on Network Services projects and providing training for ongoing support.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

· Subject matter expert for the following technologies; server, storage, backup, active directory, and email.

· Serves as top escalation resource for resolution of mission critical issues as requested by system administrator II, and or other systems managers.

· Provides technical guidance and highly specialized expert input for projects and tasks as needed.

· Responsible for designing and implementing systematic solutions that contribute to increased efficiency, capacity, performance, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery of SNL mission critical systems.

· Performs complex upgrades related to mission critical servers and storage.

· Technical lead on advanced projects to implement and or upgrade mission critical systems.

· Maintains and updates documentation as needed.

· Provides technical mentoring and guidance for system administrator I and II level personnel.

· Designs troubleshooting protocols and provides training for Network Services personnel designated to provide support for mission critical systems.

· Assists Network Services Manager in determination of overall technical direction and options.

· Provides research and testing for high end system administration solutions for the annual Network Services budget.

Required Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering or other related field or equivalent education and experience.

Experience: Six years of progressively responsible information services experience. Proven effective leadership skills. Previous project management experience desirable.

Specific Skills: Extensive experience with administration of a Microsoft Windows environment, storage and data backup systems, server hardware, SQL Server, IIS, Exchange, SMTP email and other software systems required. Required to be fluent in TCP/IP and switch and router concepts. Intermediate to advanced proficiency utilizing MS Office products. Knowledge of SNL computer systems preferred. Knowledge of SNL products and services preferred.

Special knowledge, licenses, etc:

Microsoft Certification (MCSE) recommended.

Abilities: Excellent logic and troubleshooting skills. Ability to think creatively. Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to other technical staff members. Ability to train others to support mission critical systems. Strong organizational skills required to prioritize work and meet established deadlines. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Must be self-directed and rely on judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Strong interpersonal skills required, including technical and non-technical writing and presentation skills. Must be committed to exceptional customer service and support. Must possess strong problem analysis and decision-making ability. Demonstrated ability to enforce quality improvement methodologies to improve business functions continuously. Demonstrated aptitude for learning new technologies.

Supervisory Responsibilities: The incumbent may supervise and/or provide technical guidance to other systems administrators.

Position Scope: Operating budget within confines of departmental budget.

Working Conditions (Physical Demands): General fast-paced office environment. Incumbent is required to talk, sit, stand, stoop, bend, reach, lift, and walk. Incumbent must be able to communicate by way of telephone, must be able to speak and enunciate clearly in English. Keyboarding is required. Occasional lifting packages of 25 pounds required. Regular use of computer screen to complete tasks. Noise level is low.

Others (Work Schedule/Travel/On Call, etc.): Occasional travel is required. Evening and/or weekend work required. Incumbent is required to have a flexible schedule to meet important deadlines
