Jaan Pakistan Fellowship Program

A team of four boys and four girls will constitute Jaan Pakistan’s very first Social Development Fellowship cohort. The aforementioned individuals will form 4 teams of two individuals each. Over three months, and a variety of tasks, each team will experientially learn: 

  • human centered product design
  • lean startup methodology
  • effective data gathering techniques
  • relationship building at the grassroot level
  • behaviour change communications
  • consumer education & support, and
  • making an effective sales pitch using micro credit tools and other subsidy programs.

Program Schedule:

Week 1-3: Information gathering at a low-income urban slum in Lahore

Week 4-5: Product finalization; BTL activity planning

Week 6-7: Conduct free trials across 40 homes in low-income urban slum

Week 8-12: Launch leasing program; recruit Brand Ambassadors; Sell through routine ‘demo days’

Week 13 - Report Writing & Fellows Graduation Ceremony

Prospective Fellows:

Candidates are expected to have a proven track record of extensive social work in university life, however, this is not an absolute prerequisite to win the fellowship.

Candidates with the following skills, experience and attributes will be preferred over others:

  1. Fluent in Urdu and Punjabi

  2. Exceptional report writing skills

  3. Experience in the field, especially in urban slums

  4. A strong desire to work with low-income households

  5. A strong desire to improve livelihoods through social work

  6. A strong desire to learn the fundamental blocks of social entrepreneurship

  7. The physical and mental stamina to persist in the face of criticism

  8. Basic understanding of how a social business functions

  9. Is persuasive in selling his/her ideas

  10. Can completely commit himself/herself to the fellowship program

Additional Details:

Work hours: Full-time

Project duration: 3 months

Minimum qualification: Bachelor’s Degree from an HEC recognized university

Professional work experience: not required

Benefits: Jaan Pakistan fellows will receive training, full-time work experience and a monthly stipend

About Us Jaan Pakistan is an award-winning social startup, based in Lahore, Pakistan. Jaan Pakistan was founded in June 2014, and it was formally incorporated with SECP in October 2015 as a private limited company (soon after receiving seed funding from Rwanga Foundation). In October 2014, Nobel Laureate, Professor Muhammad Yunus, endorsed Jaan Pakistan’s mission to research and manufacture affordable energy solutions for low-income communities across Pakistan and seasoned, serial entrepreneur, Doug Richard, Founder of the School for Startups, mentored the Jaan Pakistan team in Dublin, Ireland. Jaan Pakistan is launching its flagship product, a solar cooker, in March 2016. Jaan Pakistan’s primary research initiative is to completely indigenize well established solar thermal energy technologies within the end of 2016. In addition to this, Jaan Pakistan is also developing and testing new prototypes to solve energy problems across rural Pakistan. Jaan Pakistan: Core Leadership Team Jaan Pakistan fellows will get opportunities to engage with the core leadership team. Khizr Imran Tajammul (Founder/CEO) Khizr founded Jaan Pakistan in June 2014, drawing early inspiration from individuals like Prof. Muhammad Yunus and Bunker Roy. In October 2014, at a social startup competition, Khizr's business idea was validated by Mr. Yunus and serial entrepreneur, Doug Richard. Khizr is the main driving force behind Jaan Pakistan. He brings eight years of experience in behavior change communications and social cause marketing to the table. Danyal Hussain Tirmazi (COO) Danyal is the former Head of Finance & Operations at Buksh Foundation, an NGO dedicated to raising the living standard of Pakistan's rural population through financial inclusion and grant based projects. Danyal's work include pioneering movements such as Clean Energy Lending (CEL). Kashaan Tajammul (Advisor, Marketing) Soon after Jaan Pakistan won acclaim at the One Young World summit in October 2014, Kashaan began to use his knowledge of digital marketing to share the story of Jaan Pakistan online. Kashaan recently finished his MSc in Digital Marketing from Warwick University and secured a distinction. Kashaan brings with him a wealth of experience in Digital Marketing. Muhammad Ali Chishti (Advisor, Product Development) Ali Chishti did his BSc in Communications and Electronics from C3L in Sweden and then completed a 4 year degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Texas. Chishti is one of the earlier contributors to the company in terms of brainstorming plausible social business ideas to address Pakistan's energy crisis. His main focal point at Jaan Pakistan is product development. Saad Latif (Advisor, Fundraising) Saad worked with K-electric for almost 5 years where he primarily worked on distribution strategy in Karachi. More recently, he was selected as one of twelve Global Acumen Fellows. During his fellowship, Saad helped secure USD 1.8 million for Husk Power Systems - a renewable energy company in Tanzania. At Jaan Pakistan, Saad is particularly interested in grant funding.
