Critical care anaesthetists care for patients who suffer from the effects of severe infections, trauma or who have had recent major surgery. The duties and responsibilities outline below serve only as guidelines. These may be adopted by the individual health facility after making necessary modifications that suits its circumstances best:

·         Provides medical services at the scope and level of an Anesthetist to preserve the health of patients and other fellow employees.

·         Supervise, coordinate, and manage the patient’s care with the ICU team and work closely with the Physicians/surgeons and other specialty consultants as needed.

·         Critical care anestherist with the full ICU team round daily—often combined with visits by the team of physicans and surgeons. After the initial morning visits check on the patient multiple times throughout the day, with continuing care by the team of critical care doctors in the ICU through the night.

·         Ensure patients admitted to the ICU have an intravenous (I.V.) line and are also fitted with devices that continuously monitor standard vital signs such as:

Electrical activity of the heart (electrocardiogram monitoring)

Blood oxygen saturation (pulse oximeter monitoring)

Blood pressure

Respiratory rate

Heart rate

·         Critical care Anesthetist, in combination with the ICU nurse/Technician, monitor and follows the readings closely and ensure patient with lung problems may have breathing supported by a ventilator.

·         Examines patient, obtain medical history and use diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures. Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures, using local, intravenous, spinal or caudal methods.

·         Positions patient on operating table to maximize patient comfort and surgical accessibility and maintain life support and airway management, and help prepare patients for emergency surgery.

·         Monitors patient before, during, and after anesthesia and counteract adverse reactions or complications.

·         Decides when patients have recovered or stabilized enough to be sent to another room or ward or to be sent home.

·         Schedules and maintain use of surgical suite, including operating, wash-up, waiting rooms and anesthetic and sterilizing equipment.

·         Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.

·         Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.

·         Ensures operation of medical and administrative equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements following manufacturer’s instructions troubleshooting malfunctions calling for repairs maintaining equipment inventories evaluating new equipment and techniques.

·         Complies service deliverance as provided in Minimum Service Delivery Standards and SOPs.
