Teacher Assistants are employed by NIS to support teachers, working in collaboration with them to help increase student learning. They will take responsibility in a variety of contexts. The majority of Teaching Assistants will work with classes in the Early Years, but other areas will also be covered including recess duties, Library support and some Primary classes.
Report to: Head of Section
While Teaching Assistants will be under the day-to- day management of designated teachers, the relevant Heads of Section will be the official line manager to ensure consistency.
Role functions
Area 1: Classroom
Under the direction and guidance of the teachers, the Teaching Assistant will undertake some or all of these tasks:
support teachers in the classroom by working with individuals or small groups to enable all students to engage in Authentic Learning activities
work with individuals or small groups of students in order to support individual learning in literacy and numeracy and other areas of learning
support students in research tasks using internet sites, reference books, pictures, films,magazine articles and in conjunction with the Librarian
manage incidents and events to ensure un-interrupted learning in classes eg dealing with individual students needing specific urgent attention (eg sickness or bathroom)
provide accurate feedback to teachers regarding student progress as appropriate
accompany class groups on visits and trips in order to support teachers
perform recess and other supervision duties
Area 2: Administration
keep up to date and accurate records of work done with individuals and small groups in liaison with teachers
ensure that photocopied resources are available when required in sufficient quantities
maintain standard letters to parents and students and send as appropriate at the request of the teacher, according to policy
order books, equipment and stationery, if required by the teacher as part of school procedure
unpack and check orders and store as appropriate if required by the teacher
support lesson planning by setting up of equipment as directed by the teacher
keep teachers informed of any defective or broken equipment to ensure that it is repaired or replaced as soon as possible
Area 3: Preparation and Display of Learning Materials Under the guidance of the teacher:
mount and display student work in classroom areas at the request of the teacher
ensure that appropriate and related display materials are displayed in classrooms
organise teaching resources for photocopying
Area 4: Other tasks
recess and after school care supervision duties as directed
willing to perform other appropriate tasks as sanctioned by the Head of Section.
