Clean water, decent toilets and hygiene are three essentials that help people lead dignified and healthy lives.

Role of position in the organisation: 

The key role of this position is to provide leadership and guidance to both WaterAid programmes as well as implementing partners on technical aspects including infrastructure designs, technology development and improvements, innovative solutions and technical policies and guidelines corresponding to WASH programmes.

Reporting line: The position will report directly to Head of Programmes

Key working relationships:

Internal: Country Director, Programme Managers Rural and Urban, Senior Management Team, Manager Admin Security and IT, Regional Technical Advisor, Regional and Global Technical WASH forums

External: Technical Leads of IPs and organisations, relevant government departments and agencies, consultants etc.

Purpose of Role

To be accountable for providing strategic direction to the work on WASH technologies as models.

Will also be accountable to provide technical oversight on infrastructure development, ensuring water quality and environmental assessments of the work being carried out by implementing partners and WaterAid Pakistan.  

Responsibilities

Key accountabilities fall under the following categories

Developing WASH Technological Models 

• Lead and support research on water and sanitation technologies for providing viable, cost effective and replicable technological solutions for Pakistan.
• With the support of programme teams and academic partner(s) develop viable water & sanitation technological models
• Place tested technological models in the field and ensure its successful implementation
• Document the successfully implemented technological model for influencing its replication by stakeholders    

Support to WAP programme teams and Implementing Partners

• Review exiting standards of water & sanitation infrastructure and develop guidelines where needed.
• Ensure that WaterAid standards related to infrastructure quality, water quality and positive environment impacts are being adhered to
• Support implementing partners by providing inputs in project designs from a technical perspective
• Ensure WaterAid Pakistan water quality protocols and health & safety at construction project policies are practiced by implementing partners and contractors   

Knowledge management and Sharing WASH Technologies

• Maintain effective coordination with relevant programme teams in the UK and within WAP programme teams for bringing best technical knowledge to ongoing or in initiating new work
• In consultation with the line manager, and support from programme teams develop quality papers/ documents on successful WASH technology models for presentation and sharing at various national and international forums

Person Specification

Qualification

• A University degree in Civil Engineering, Water & Environmental Sanitation
• Master’s in Civil Engineering with specialization in water and sanitation

Experience

• At least 5 years’ experience in WASH sector with current knowledge of the latest developments and technologies in water and sanitation.
• Must be able to work with programme teams and stakeholders for discussing and drawing up sound programme designs.
• Demonstrated skills in carrying out technical designing and evaluation of WASH projects both in rural and urban areas.
• Expertise on AutoCAD and other related engineering softwares. 

Knowledge & skills

• Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
• Demonstrated excellent programme planning monitoring and reporting skills
• Self-motivated person able to work without close supervision
• Able to work effectively in a diverse team environment 
• Knowledge of prevailing standards on Environment and related disciplines and government policies and programmes on W&S technologies.
