Synthesis of Cyclic Carbonates by Carbon dioxide (CO2) mild Conversion

<div><p>Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is increasing in the atmosphere with the passage of time that is an environmental threat and an important burning issue for the society. Carbon dioxide is kinetically and thermodynamically stable, but the utilization of carbon dioxide as a chemical feedstock provides interesting organic structures with high atom economy. Among these, carbonates are important as they can be used in various applications, including additives in fuel, aprotic solvents, monomers in polymeric structures, electrolytes in Lithium-ion batteries, and raw materials in various reactions.</p> <p>Ionic liquids (ILs) are a new emerging research area. The use of ILs for the fixation of carbon dioxide into value-added chemicals is considered cutting edge technology. ILs possess prominent features such as high thermal and chemical stability, non-flammability, low vapor pressure, easy recyclability, biodegradability, functional variability, and high solubility.</p> <p>In this work, a novel dual-IL system has been synthesized and employed to catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides without any solvents at low pressure (1.5 MPa) and low reaction temperature (80 °C). The key features of this type of catalyst are:</p> <ul> <li>Require low reaction conditions (80 oC, 1.5 MPa)</li> <li>Easy separation of catalyst from the sample</li> <li>High yield in the absence of any solvent</li> <li>Can be re-used at least six times without any loss in activity</li> </ul></div>
