Basic Job Responsibilities:

1.    Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders; detecting therapeutic incompatibilities.

2.    Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.

3.    Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies; advising interventions.

4.    Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, charges, and inspections.

5.    Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals; counseling patients on drug therapies.

6.    Develops hospital staff's pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals.

7.    Complies with state and federal drug laws of Pakistan, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions.

8.    Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.

9.    Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

10.  Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

11.  Review the prescriptions, verify the dispensed drugs on labels, receive routine refund of medicines, compound preparations not available commercially and preparation and submission of expiry reports of drugs which are near to expire in next 6 months.

12.  Participate in medical rounds when deemed necessary for medication history of patients in promoting rational drug therapy.

13.  Notify physicians of any therapeutic incompatibilities, potential drug interactions and duplicate prescriptions.

14.  Make certain that the right patient takes the right drug and right dosage at the right time.

15.  Attend scientific seminar-workshops/consultative meetings and continuing education on drug-related matters and hospital pharmacy practices.

16.  Participate in the QAP of the Pharmaceutical Service, assist in the training of pharmacy interns and check completed work of pharmacy technicians before issuance.

17.  Assist the Supervisor Pharmacy in the supervision of Pharmaceutical Service activities or perform other duties relating to the preparation, distribution, disposition and inspection of drugs and supplies. Also to assist in planning, organizing and implementing pharmacy policies and procedures in accordance with established policies of the hospital.

18.  Assist Supervisor Pharmacy in inspection and monitoring of drugs in all treatment regions i.e. maintenance of PAR levels and crash carts.

19.  Perform the activities of Drug Information Centre, counsel the patients when deemed necessary, maintain daily critical count and follow-up inventory monthly.

Perform other duties assigned by HOD / Management.
