The students of Lahore Grammar School – Johar Town Senior Boys Branch have recently become the first Pakistani team to win the International Space Station Design Competition held in Florida, U.S.A. The competition, held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at the prestigious Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, comprised of 19 teams of students hailing from 13 countries across the globe. Following the competition format, the teams were divided among 4 “companies” and were tasked with submitting a proposal for a space settlement within a limited amount of time. The Pakistani team, working in conjunction with students from the United States and the United Kingdom, were able to secure themselves as winners of the competition. The team from LGS Johar Town was the sole representative of Pakistan, qualifying for the event after being selected as one of the winning teams from the Asian Regional Space Settlement Design Competition in India earlier this year.
The team comprised of 13 students – Mujtaba Ahmed Khawaja, Salman Ahmad, Muhammad Arham, Mustafa Arshad Mirza, Sayd Bajwa, Muhammad Furrukh Saeed, Muhammad Ali Sajid, Ali Khaqan, Shaheer Sajid, Ali Ahmad Khan, Sabeeh Ahmad, Junaid Shafique & Ahsan Karim – along with Ms. Faiqa Afzal, the Principal of LGS Johar Town, and their coach Mr. Khalil Akhtar, with Mr. Mohsin Iftikhar providing support to the boys. Ms. Faiqa was humbled to receive the distinguished honour, a feat her team had been constantly endeavouring over for the past 8 years. “It takes a lot of hard work,” says Ms. Faiqa. “It was over the entire summer that they [the students] kept working, but they had the drive. I have to give it to them. They didn’t give up. They said, ‘This time, we are going to make it!’” With the support of the administration and the staff, the students worked hard and trained for the competition, staying in touch with their support team in Pakistan while in the U.S., and collaborating with foreign students to achieve victory.
The Rozee Weblog team congratulates the students, faculty, and administration staff of LGS Johar Town Senior Boys Branch on their wonderful performance and victory at the ISSDC, and wishes them the best of luck in all their future endeavours. Their win is a victory for Pakistan, and a sign of the bright future that awaits our country at the hands of the talented young individuals of today!
