The faculty member will be assigned to the 4-year B.Ed. (Elementary) degree program at the Government Elementary College of Education, Hussainabad and will report to the College’s Vice Rector. The teaching load for a Lecturer will be three courses per year as well as practicum supervision in either the Fall or Spring semester.

Durbeen, a Karachi-based nonprofit education company, is working to establish government schools that deliver an outstanding quality of education in Pakistan. The company plans to achieve this by first preparing high-quality, professionally qualified teachers for these schools, through a public-private partnership in the Government College of [Undergraduate] Teacher Education, Hussainabad campus in Karachi.

Hussainabad is one of the oldest Teacher Training Institutes of Sindh, founded in 1956, and has tremendous potential to become a leading teacher education college in Pakistan. The key objectives for this project are as follows:

1.Refurbish the existing infrastructure of the GECE to increase enrollment 2.Improve the governance of the GECE for better management, leadership and coordination of academic activities at the GECE3.Improve the standard of education at the GECE to graduate teachers who can teach and assess 21st century knowledge and skills

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The main duties and responsibilities for this role are as follows:

 

COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI

1.Participate in and give critical feedback during the review of assigned courses with the University of Helsinki

2.Participate in Professional Development workshops, conducted by the University of Helsinki faculty

3.For only one of the assigned courses, co-plan lessons with faculty from the University of Helsinki

4.For the same course, record a pre-determined number of lessons to send to University of Helsinki faculty and participate in feedback sessions thereafter

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND ROLE

1.Develop, plan and implement a high quality and student-centric curriculum in assigned courses2.Plan and execute schemes of work, lesson plans, assessments, learning materials, school visits etc.3.Maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance4.Observe peers’ lessons and provide constructive feedback afterwards5.Collaborate with peers in lesson planning and co-teach lessons, when applicable6.Participate in, and occasionally organize, departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within the department7.Supervise a fixed number of students during their Practicum8.Hold regular office hours adequate for advising and counseling students9.Liaise with other College staff to ensure the smooth delivery of assigned responsibilities10.Participate, when required, in faculty committees, general meetings etc.11.Participate in the College’s quality assurance mechanisms (Lesson Observations, Annual Performance Appraisal, student feedback, Student portfolios etc.) with a view to continuously12.Maintain own continuing professional development and engage with broader scholarly and professional communities13.Participate in the intellectual and artistic life of the College community by serving on campus-wide committees, advising a student organization or other service opportunities14.Ensure compliance with all College policies, procedures and regulations
