This is skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy-duty equipment. Incumbents are responsible for the performance of skilled mechanical tasks in the major repair of light automotive and heavy and support equipment. General supervision is received from an immediate supervisor.Examples of Work: Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

Job Summary

Performs complex preventative maintenance tasks, and troubleshoots and repairs a wide variety of equipment (Trucks and Yellow Iron).

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Other minor duties may be assigned. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Repairs as needed equipment (including, but not limited to, bulldozers, motor grader, scrapers, backhoes, front end loaders, yard trucks, vibratory roller, farm tractors, forklifts, and company cars).
  • Diagnoses and repairs differentials, hydraulic systems, motors, transmissions, drives, air conditioning systems, and electrical systems.
  • Performs tasks per preventative maintenance checklist.
  • Completes records such as work orders, card files, P.Mchecklists, and oil samples.
  • Services and maintains other equipment such as light plants, water pump, welders, and other equipment.
  • Reference site-specific procedures and more detailed site-specific job descriptions.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Repairs and maintains automobiles, buses, trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, and support equipment.
  • Maintains records of work performed.
  • Overhauls and repairs engines, disassembles engines, replaces defective parts, reassembles engines, and makes adjustments and repairs to electrical and fuel systems.
  • Repairs and maintains light automotive and heavy equipment in the shop and the field.
  • Inspects work in progress to see that repairs and replacements are properly made and units are satisfactorily assembled.
  • Performs skilled repair work in repairing hydraulic systems.
  • Maintains shop equipment and acquires parts and tools as needed.
  • Inspects, repairs, and adjusts steering clutches on crawler type tractor.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on light automotive and heavy and support equipment.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to work orders, monthly time reports, and purchase of supplies and repair parts.
  • Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

IV. Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience

  • Education: Not required. matric pass will be prefered
  • Experience: Six years of relevant work experience.
  • These minimum qualifications have been agreed upon by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in this job class and are based upon a job analysis and the essential functions.

 B. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and must have a clean driving record.
  • Must be at least 20 years of age
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Successfully complete pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check, which will include previous employment check, criminal history and motor vehicle record review.

C. Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities Required

  • Skill in operating tools, equipment, parts and procedures utilized during the repair and servicing of vehicles and equipment, skill in repair of special purpose equipment, ability to effectively communicate needed repairs or tasks, ability to diagnose defects in and repair a variety of equipment and vehicles, ability to utilize fleet maintenance software program, and knowledge of Total Tire Maintenance Program may be required.

  • Respirators – Full face OV/AG or half face with face shield
  • Full face supplied air in some arrears
  • Suit – Appropriate Barrier Suite: Liquid – yellow Tyvek with sleeves, apron, booties; Solid – white Tyvek
  • Gloves – appropriate to hazards present – PVC over Nitrile or Butyl (Liquid Waste) Leather Work (Solid Waste), Leather/Cloth work (when handling equipment or containers)
  • Overshoes – Vinyl Booties – Waterproof Boots – Chemical Resistant Boots

  • Shoes - Steel Toe

V. Work Environment Listed below are key points regarding the physical requirements, and work environment of the job.

  • Required to use motor coordination with arm, hand, finger, and leg dexterity.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects more than _ pounds frequently.
  • Requires pushing, pulling, bending, twisting and lifting up to _ lbs.
  • Will be exposed to a physical environment, which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements most of the workday.
