A.     Management of working hours

The nature of main tasks and responsibilities expects the superior to manage the driver’s working hours per day flexibly according to the official weekly/monthly working hours mentioned in the Handbook for National Staff. This may require the driver to be working in shifts (or partial shifts) for optimal utilization of the existing project cars 

B.     Responsibilities

The driver is responsible for

  •   Safely and responsibly performing all official travels using the official vehicles
  •   Regularly servicing and maintaining official vehicles
  •   Maintaining accurately a logbook of all movements in his/her assigned vehicle
  •   Taking account of all available information on road conditions, accessible routes, and locations
  •   Running official errands and
  •   Assisting with other office work 

The driver performs the following tasks:

1.      Driving

The driver

  •   Provides passenger transport in an official car for office, project or programme staff, official visitors, and guests
  •   Runs errands for the project, programme, or office, e.g. Sending letters and messages, paying bills, and buying smaller quantities of office supplies and ensures safety and confidentiality of any material, mail or documents that are provided for delivery
  •   Helps with transporting goods
  •   Completes the vehicle log correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards
  •   Drives safely, in conformity with good driving practices and road traffic regulations
  •   Following GIZ security rules in terms of changing routes frequently and passive driving to ensure low profile
  •   Fastens seat belt and politely asks all passengers to do so as well
  •   Undertakes field travel as assigned
  •   Never leaves the vehicle unattended and ensures all possible security measures 

2.      Service

The driver                        

  •   Cleans the interior and exterior of the vehicle(s) regularly
  •   Checks oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tyre pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle, headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc. monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first)
  •   Is responsible for the project vehicle documents and their good condition, keeping a vehicle log and record of all maintenance works
  •   Calculates monthly fuel, oil, and lubricant consumption for the daily cash fund and for forwarding monthly vouchers to cost accounting
  •   Keeps vehicles tools, emergency equipment and documents in good order
  •   Attends to any other maintenance service that is required as routine.
  •   Immediately reports all involvement of official vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss, or theft of vehicle fittings
  •   Follows GIZ Security Protocol and considers security related instructions from the GIZ Risk Management Office 

3.      Knowledge management

The driver

  •   Uses all available information (including current news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes, and locations, and shares this information with other office drivers
  •   Ensures a prior route survey when driving to unknown locations 

4.      Other duties/additional tasks

The driver

  •   Assists other colleagues as needed in the office if there is no travel pending, carries out other office work on request
  •   Supports organising administrative and logistics aspects of programme activities (meetings, workshops etc.)
  •   Willing to work after hours/over time, including nights and weekends if required 

D.     Required qualifications, competences, and experience 

Qualifications

  •   Secondary school education
  •   Holds a valid driver’s licence
  •   Ideally holds a first aid certificate
  •   Ideally has participated in security training for drivers in hostile working environments 

Professional experience

  •   At least 5 years’ work experience as a driver with references
  •   No major accidents in the past 3 years
  •   Previous work experience, including driving bullet proof vehicles, with an international organization is an asset 

Other knowledge, additional competences

  •   Good command of English
  •   Fluent use and knowledge of the local language widely used in the region
  •   Discipline and punctuality
  •   Resilience and patience
  •   Familiarity with project region Peshawar and other relevant locations
  •   Appropriate appearance and friendly manner with all passengers
  •   Always ensure unrestricted availability of vehicle and reports restrictions immediately
  •   Willingness to upgrade skills as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are to be agreed with management
