Objective:

An Audiologist, or Hearing Doctor, is a medical professional who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders, hearing loss and related issues in children and adults. Their duties include completing hearing examination, fitting, adjusting and maintaining patients’ hearing aids and providing treatment for balance disorders.

Project Overview:

The project aims to improve the status of health & nutrition and promote better health & hygiene practices among school going children especially adolescent girls in District Buner. The target group includes the primary to higher secondary school children, adolescent girls and school teachers of target area.  This project will improve the health and learning outcomes of the school going children through;

1.      Health screening, early diagnosis and treatment of visual and hearing impairments, Worming, anemia and malnourishment in 150 schools (74 girls’ schools and 76 Primary boys’ schools) of Tehsil Gagra, Buner.

2.      Two-days training of 300 teachers (148 females, 152 males), on health screening techniques, health education, WASH, MHM, respiratory hygiene, food & nutrition.

3.      Meetings and FGDs with the relevant staff of health and education department.

4.      The project will engage district Buner health, education and population welfare departments to systematically adopt and carry on school health program.

5.      The project aims to launch AGAH (Adolescent Girls Awareness on Health) campaign in all-girls school of target tehsil.

Main Responsibilities/Activities

Audiologists’ duties and responsibilities include both physical and psychological components of medicine. In addition to diagnosing and treating patients with a variety of ear and hearing issues, Audiologists will often have to psychologically assess the effect of hearing damage on a patient before starting treatment. Different types of Audiologist responsibilities include the following:

·        Examine students with ear, hearing or balance and other related problems.

·        Assess examination results and diagnose the students.

·        Determine the best course of treatment, taking the patient’s needs and concerns into consideration.

·        Make moulds, fitting and dispense hearing aids.

·        Provide counseling for the patient and close family members on how to best listen and communicate using methods such as lip reading or technology or sign language.

·        Evaluate and follow up on the patient’s condition and record any developments.

·        Educate parents on ways to prevent hearing loss.

·        Research causes and potential treatments for hearing and balance disorders.

Minimum Requirement:

Qualification: Being hired as an Audiologist requires a 4 year bachelors in Hearing Sciences (Audiology) program from accredited institute/university;

Experience:

·        Active practice license

·        3 to 4 years of clinical practice

·        Experience in School Ear and Hearing Health Program

Skills:

Since Audiologists deal with sensitive medical matters and spend a lot of time closely consulting with patients, empathy and communication are desired skills for any potential Audiologist. An Audiologist’s skills may include:

·        Ability to perform Otoscopy, Pure Tone Audiometry, analyzing hearing thresholds

·        Ability to communicate with patients about sensitive topics

·        Ability to work with other medical professionals as needed to diagnose and treat patients

·        Ability to apply medical knowledge to patient cases to treat and diagnose each case
