Position Title:    Behavior Change Communication (BCC) Specialist

 Overall Responsibilities

The Behavior Change Communication (BCC) specialist will work under the supervision of Director programs and Project Manager and will be responsible for all BCC related activities under Donor funded project, ‘Improving access to school health services for children and adolescent girls in Tehsil Gagra, District Buner’. He/she will provide technical assistance in planning and implementing awareness campaigns in schools of Tehsil Gagra to promote better health & hygiene practices among school going children especially adolescent girls. The BCC specialist will primarily be responsible for information, education and communication (IEC) of the project through development of IEC materials, Brochures, hygiene charts, audio/visual messages, 2D animated videos that support awareness on MHM and important health topics. The BCC specialist will be responsible for designing and executing the AGAH (Adolescent Girls Awareness on Health) campaign to promote best health and hygiene practices including menstrual hygiene management (MHM) among adolescent girls.

Project Overview:

The project aims to improve the status of health & nutrition and promote better health & hygiene practices among school going children especially adolescent girls in District Buner. The target group includes the primary to higher secondary school children, adolescent girls and school teachers of target area.  This project will improve the health and learning outcomes of the school going children through;

1.      Health screening, early diagnosis and treatment of visual and hearing impairments, Worming, anemia and malnourishment in 150 schools (74 girls’ schools and 76 Primary boys’ schools) of Tehsil Gagra Buner.

2.      Two-days training of 300 teachers (148 females, 152 males), on health screening techniques, health education, WASH, MHM, respiratory hygiene, food & nutrition.

3.      Meetings and FGDs with the relevant staff of health and education department.

4.      The project will engage district Buner health, education and population welfare departments to systematically adopt and carry on school health program.

5.      The project aims to launch AGAH (Adolescent Girls Awareness on Health) campaign in all-girls school of target tehsil.

Main Responsibilities/Activities

1.      Design, monitor, and implement health and hygiene promotion activities, ensure that all activities and disseminated material are consistent with accepted best practices, relevant to the need of student’s especially adolescent girls and are culturally appropriate.

2.      Formulate culturally appropriate IEC material/BCC strategies based on approved and standard communication models of WHO (WHO Guidelines for School Health Services 2021), NCHD and UNICEF (Guidance on Menstrual Health & Hygiene 2019).

3.      Review and finalize modules/contents and IEC materials for conducting awareness sessions on health education, menstrual hygiene management (MHM), respiratory hygiene management and food & nutrition.

 

4.      Seek approval (letter of endorsement) for IEC material and awareness sessions modules from the evaluation committee to disseminate material among students and teachers.

 

5.      Design Urdu language, culturally appropriate brochures containing key health awareness messages, personal hygiene charts, and booklets on balanced nutrition.

6.      Disseminate Urdu language brochure along-with “My Personal Hygiene Chart” having checklist of good hygiene practices among students of target schools.

7.      Develop Radio messages for Public Service Announcement (PSA) on Health Awareness in Urdu and Pashto languages. Broadcast eight (08) such messages for 12 months on MHM, WASH, Balanced nutrition, Personal, dental and respiratory Hygiene.

8.      Conduct two (02) Radio Programs  (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Radio FM 92.2) with Health Experts on Health & Hygiene Awareness in Urdu & Pushto

9.      Conduct research and develop content of two (02) animated video messages in Urdu and Pashto languages on MHM and Personal Hygiene.

10.   Facilitate and coordinate with the project team in finalizing the content for teachers training modules.

11.   Oversee schoolteachers training on health education including WASH, MHM, food & nutrition and respiratory hygiene in compliance with internal and external requirements.

Designing & Implementation of AGAH campaign on Menstrual Hygiene Management and Health Awareness:

12.   Develop strategy to execute AGAH campaign on Menstrual Hygiene Management and Health Awareness. Around 3,769 school going (complete adolescent age group) girls of target tehsil shall be reached under AGAH to impart appropriate knowledge on puberty and related changes, body protection, menstrual hygiene management (MHM), WASH and nutrition through classroom sessions.

13.   Design, monitor and implement AGAH campaign to promote awareness on MHM and important health topics among school going adolescent girls by using technology, radio (PSMs/ Radio Programs with Health Specialists), locally acceptable audio/visual messages (2D animated videos on MHM) and IEC material (brochures with animations) in Urdu and Pushto languages.

14.   Conduct 50 MHM awareness sessions in middle to higher secondary girl’s schools on the following thematic areas; Puberty related body changes; Body Protection; MHM; Health and Menstruation; Nutrition and Micronutrient deficiencies among adolescents.

15.   Design and disseminate IEC material including brochures and booklets on balanced nutrition for girls among students, teachers and parents.

16.   Develop and finalize concept of animated video messages with animators/ video developers on MHM. These animated videos will help adolescent age group girls to grasp the idea of MHM in a relatable way.

17.   Conduct Pilot testing of the animated videos in three (03) schools. Document the feedback on the animated video through pre and post-test forms to gauge the level of improvement on the topic of MHM.

18.   Seek approval (letter of endorsement) for animated video messages from the committee to disseminate videos among students and teachers.

19.   Conduct screening of animated video messages among female students of adolescent age group and teachers during the awareness sessions.

20.   Disseminate animated video messages among adolescent age group female students and teachers via following mediums Teacher-Students by distributing IEC material; and in Class-room and training hall via multimedia.

21.   Conduct Two (02) Radio Programs per month featuring health specialist to talk on multiple health issues under AGAH campaign. Each program will deliver key messages on health topics for public awareness and behavior change.

Coordination & Liaison Activities:

22.   Collaborate with the project team and keep them informed of all relevant developments on the BCC activities.

23.   Ensure that all the BCC and awareness campaign activities of the project are implemented according to the approved donor and local government agreements.

24.   Establish and maintain active interaction with the media, academia, Health & Education departments and other relevant stakeholders to communicate project achievements and ensure their engagement and interests in the favor of increased attention to the health status of school going children.

Minimum Requirement:

Qualification: University Degree (Master’s or above) in one of the following fields is required social and behavioral science, sociology, anthropology, psychology, education, media & communication, public relations, public health or other related social science.

Experience: Minimum 5 year’s professional experience in areas of social development program planning, communications and development, public advocacy and/or related areas at the international and/or large organization some of which preferably were served in a developing country is required.

Languages: Fluency in English and Urdu (Oral and writing both). Candidate with fluency in Pushto will be preferred
