Job Description


1.  Attendance and involvement at work:

·      Observe the MSF charter.

·      Perform all activity in line with the MSF protocols and procedures.

·      Respect the time schedule and be at work on time (flexible at anytime).

2. Scrub nurse

2.1 Preparation of the operation

-    Dressing for theatre: theatre gown, mask, sterile cap and gloves

-    Carrying out a surgical hand wash before each operation

-    Helping with the installation of the patient and ensuring her correct positioning on the operating table

-    Dressing and putting on gloves whilst remaining sterile

-    Preparing all the instruments and equipment required for the smooth running of the operation

-    Anticipating the material needed by the surgeon

-    Counting all instruments, small compresses and abdominal compresses before starting the operation

-    Preparing the sterile surgical towels and helping the surgeon to place them on the table

2.2 Assisting the surgeon during the operation

-    Anticipating the surgeon’s needs

-    Presenting the instruments to the surgeon correctly

-    Cleaning the instruments as and when they are used

-    Counting the instruments, compresses and needles at the end of the procedure (with the help of the Circulating Nurse)

-    Checking that any compresses added during the operation are included in the final count

-    Informing the surgeon of the final count

-    Checking that drains, tubes etc are all working correctly

-    Carrying out sterile dressing at the end of the procedure

 -   Ensuring that the personnel follow rules of hygiene and asepsis throughout the operation

1.3 Preparing the patient for leaving theatre

 -   Watching that all connections are unplugged for the transfer of the patient

-    Helping the team to move the patient from the operating theatre to the recovery room

2.4 Collecting material

-    Throwing needles and scalpels in the sharps container. Checking that no material or needles remain in the surgical towels

-    Placing instruments into the soaking container

-    Putting soiled linen, operating cloths and hats into the container provided for them

-    Controlling the cleaning of theatre before the next operation

-    Knowing the procedures to follow in the case of accidental blood exposure

3. Circulating Nurse

3.1 Receiving patients in theatre

-    Looking through the patient’s dossier

-    Checking the identity of the patient and checking her consent for the operation

-    Informing and reassuring the patient during the operation

3.2 Preparing theatre

-    Ensuring the availability of waste containers around the operating table

-    Preparing all instruments and equipment required for the intervention

-    Checking the material works correctly (aspirator, electric scalpels, scialytics etc.)

-    Anticipating the material the surgeon may need

-    Checking sterile material: expiry dates, undamaged wrapping and control pastels for sterilisation

-    Filling in the tracing book and pasting in the sterilisation control pastels

-    Counting the number of compresses before the operation starts

-    Using a single waste container in the corner of theatre for papers and other waste

-    Checking that the anaesthetist has his own waste container

-    Watching that the team follows asepsis rules when circulating in theatre

3.3 Installation of the patient

-    Installing the patient according to the type of operation

-    Checking the supports

-    Ensuring her security throughout the operation

3.4 Assisting the scrub nurse and surgeon during the operation

-    Helping the instrument nurse

-    Opening packaging following the rules of asepsis

-    Anticipating the surgeon’s needs

-    Responding to the team’s needs in terms of supplementary material

-    Limiting and controlling entries to theatre to authorised persons only

-    Ensuring that all material and compresses added during the operation are included in the final count

-    Informing the surgeon of the final count

-    With the scrub nurse, dressing the operated area and checking that drains, tubes etc. work properly

-    Ensuring that all personnel in theatre follow asepsis rules throughout the operation

3.5 Preparing the patient for leaving theatre

-    Helping the team to transport the patient from the operating theatre to the recovery room

-    Checking that the patient is transferred with a complete dossier

3.6 Collecting material

-    Ensuring that bins are emptied of their contents

-   Collecting soiled instruments/linen and taking them to the sterilisation unit (following clean and soiled circuits)

-    Checking that no needles remain in the surgical towels

-    Participating in and checking the cleaning of theatre before the next operation

-    Knowing the procedures to follow in the case of accidental blood exposur

4. Reception of the new-born

Participate when needed in the reception of the baby for elective caesarean.

5. Recovery room care

-     In collaboration with Gynaecologist/Surgeon, and Anaesthetist, provide immediate post-operative care and monitoring care, according to the MSF protocol

-     Ensuring the medical file is complete with the medical prescription and recommendation from the anaesthetist for the patient to be shifted to post-operative room in IPD department

-     Helping the team to transport of the patient from the recovery room to post-operative room in IPD Department

-     Doing a good (oral and written) handover to the Nurse in IPD when the patient is shifted to IPD, with complete medical file.

6. Others

-    Maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of the Operation Theatre and recovery Room.

-    Participating in filling the daily consumption, weekly inventory and preparation of weekly order.

-    Participating in regular team meetings.

-    Participating in ongoing trainings.

-    Actively supporting departments of WH (Maternity, IPD, NBU, SD) as requested by supervisor and when OT workload allows.

-    Informing direct supervisor in event of damage or error.
