The Surgeon at Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI) plays a vital role in delivering expert surgical care and ensuring optimal patient outcomes. The ideal candidate possesses strong skills in surgical procedures, patient assessment, sterile techniques, emergency response, laboratory test analysis, and critical care management. This position demands an experienced professional with at least three years of relevant experience and valid PMDC registration. Candidates with FCPS qualification or those meeting the Public Service Commissions criteria are preferred. The Surgeon leads and manages a team of 20 healthcare professionals, fostering a collaborative environment that emphasizes patient safety, efficient care delivery, and adherence to intensive care unit protocols.
In this role, the Surgeon applies meticulous surgical techniques, monitors patient conditions rigorously, and coordinates with multidisciplinary teams to handle emergency situations and complex surgical cases. The role requires proficiency in sterilization procedures and intensive care management to minimize infection risks and promote rapid patient recovery. The Surgeon remains current with advances in surgical practices and regulatory standards, ensuring that all services meet or exceed healthcare guidelines. This leadership role involves managing staff members, delegating responsibilities effectively, and mentoring team members to enhance skills and maintain high-quality healthcare services.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough patient assessments to determine surgical needs and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Perform a wide range of surgical procedures with precision, adhering strictly to sterile techniques and safety protocols.
- Implement emergency response measures swiftly to manage critical patient conditions and stabilize patients.
- Analyze laboratory test results accurately to support diagnosis and guide treatment decisions.
- Oversee sterilization procedures within the surgical environment to prevent infections and maintain a safe clinical setting.
- Manage patient care during pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative stages to ensure optimal recovery.
- Administer critical care management according to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) protocols for patients requiring intensive monitoring.
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate a multidisciplinary team of 20 healthcare professionals, promoting teamwork and continuous professional development.
- Ensure compliance with medical licensing requirements including valid PMDC registration and, preferably, FCPS qualification.
- Maintain up-to-date records of surgical interventions, patient progress, and care outcomes in line with healthcare regulations.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development activities to enhance surgical skills and knowledge.
- Collaborate with other departments and healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive patient care.
- Implement healthcare policies and guidelines provided by the institution and relevant public health authorities.
- Evaluate surgical equipment and supplies to maintain readiness and functionality for all procedures.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior surgeons and clinical staff to foster skill advancement and quality performance.

Traditional gender roles in Pakistan especially in NWFP, which remains indulged in tribal culture, define the woman’s place as in the home and not in the workplace, and define the man as the breadwinner. Consequently, the society invests far less in women than men. Women in NWFP suffer more from poverty of opportunities throughout their lives as compared to other provinces. Economic vulnerability is a key factor in the rise of poverty in Pakistan; vulnerability also arises from social powerlessness, political instability, and ill-functioning institutions. Corruption and political instabilities such as various separatist movements in Baluchistan and Waziristan resulted in reduction of business confidence, deterioration of economic growth, reduced public expenditure, poor delivery of public services, and undermining of the rule of law. The root causes of current unrest in whole country especially FATA and FRS are linked with the absence of the opportunities for youth in all sections of life in general and particular in livelihoods. Active participation of the youth in decision making and development of the area is neglected and never given a chance to decide their fate. This made youth of the area frustrated and restless and compelled them to take part in the unhealthy activities. Poverty and the lack of modern curriculum have proved destabilizing factors for Pakistani society as these causes our youth to be exploited by religious organizations banned by the government to run schools and produce militant literature. Eradication of poverty cannot be brought about by charity, but needs first and foremost empowering the poor, focusing on women, and tapping their tremendous potential.
