The Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Aga Khan University is inviting applications for the position of Research Specialist to support its Outreach and Research Programme. This programme operates across ten community-based field sites throughout Pakistan, including four in Karachi. The role is centered on advancing maternal and newborn health through community-based research, with a particular focus on engaging and building the capacity of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs). The department is equipped with nationally and internationally recognized research facilities, such as Nutritional and Infectious Disease Research Laboratories, and is dedicated to maintaining a diverse, inclusive, and respectful work environment that prioritizes the protection of vulnerable populations.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate and oversee the implementation of community-based study activities in close collaboration with TBAs and other community stakeholders. Provide hands-on training, supervision, and mentoring to TBAs and field research teams to ensure the effective execution of research protocols. Ensure the accurate and timely collection, verification, and reporting of both quantitative and qualitative data. Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and a comprehensive manual of operations to guide study activities. Conduct training sessions for study staff in line with established study protocols and guidelines. Monitor field progress regularly, troubleshoot operational challenges, and ensure strict adherence to study protocols and ethical standards. Facilitate community engagement efforts, manage refusals or conflicts sensitively, and maintain trust with participants and local leaders. Prepare and compile study progress reports and present findings as required. Additionally, develop high-quality research proposals for funding agencies, conduct research activities, and contribute to academic publications.
Required Qualifications
A Master’s degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health, or a related clinical or health discipline is essential. Candidates should have a minimum of three years’ experience, preferably in data collection and analysis within field research or clinical trials. Demonstrated experience in maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) or reproductive health research programs is required, with a focus on safe delivery, newborn care, and infection prevention. Proven skills in field monitoring and reporting are necessary, including familiarity with mobile data collection platforms such as ODK, REDCap, or Kobo. The ability to make sound judgments in dynamic field environments is critical, particularly in managing refusals, unexpected events, and ethical dilemmas. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities are needed to anticipate challenges and develop culturally appropriate solutions. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills are important for effective collaboration with TBAs, health workers, and community members. Proficiency in local languages, including Sindhi and Urdu, is essential, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Candidates must also demonstrate strong computer literacy.
