Software Engineer II - Backend | NextGen Engineering

Careem is on a mission to build the Everything App for the greater Middle East, aiming to simplify daily life by seamlessly integrating transportation, food and grocery ordering, and payment management. Since its inception in 2012, Careem has empowered over 2.5 million Captains and served more than 70 million customers across 70+ cities in 10 countries, spanning from Morocco to Pakistan. As the company enters an exciting AI-driven phase, it is seeking passionate software engineers to join its NextGen Engineering Programme. This initiative is designed to cultivate engineers proficient in writing clean, maintainable code, applying SOLID principles, and designing scalable, reliable systems. The programme covers a wide range of engineering domains including Backend, Frontend, Web, Mobile, Data Analysis, MLOps, Infrastructure, Cyber Security, and QA. Engineers will primarily focus on building distributed backend systems critical to Careem’s platform, handling everything from user requests to payment processing, utilizing technologies such as Java 8, Spring Boot, Micro-Service Architecture, SQL/no-SQL databases, and AWS infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain distributed backend systems that fulfill demanding functional, scalability, and reliability requirements in a fast-growing environment.
- Uphold high standards of code quality, maintainability, readability, and comprehensive testing coverage.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, product owners, and designers to address complex challenges across the platform.
- Act as an integral member of an autonomous, cross-functional agile team.
- Continuously document and refine engineering practices to improve system performance and reliability.
- Contribute to scaling highly distributed systems that support critical services within Careem’s ecosystem.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
- 2 to 4 years of professional experience in software engineering.
- Strong grasp of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems and write clean, maintainable code with a genuine passion for coding.
- Ability to communicate technical challenges and solutions clearly, adapt to loosely defined problems, and manage rapidly evolving requirements.
- Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and working on products with large-scale impact.
- Effective communication skills and meticulous attention to detail.
