KPMG Middle East is expanding its in-house actuarial team to support a variety of engagements across the region. This role is integral to the team, working closely with engagement groups on employee benefit valuations, with a primary focus on IAS 19 and end of service benefit obligations for clients in the Middle East. The position involves technical, judgement-based work conducted to audit standards. While IAS 19 forms the core responsibility initially, there is opportunity to broaden experience across the wider actuarial portfolio, including insurance-related engagements, as the team grows.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform defined benefit and end of service benefit valuations under IAS 19, including calculations of service cost, interest cost, and remeasurement.
- Set and support key actuarial assumptions such as discount rates, salary escalation, attrition, mortality, and retirement.
- Review and critically assess valuation reports and assumptions prepared by other actuaries.
- Build, test, document, and maintain valuation models, ensuring they are updated and accurate year on year.
- Standardize the valuation process by incorporating automation to enhance accuracy and repeatability.
- Prepare IAS 19 disclosure schedules, reconciliations, and sensitivity analyses.
- Document actuarial procedures and conclusions in compliance with audit file standards.
- Collaborate with engagement teams and communicate results clearly to non-actuarial stakeholders, including clients.
Required Qualifications
- Nearly qualified or fully qualified Associate of a recognized actuarial body such as SOA, IFoA, or an equivalent organization.
- A minimum of three years’ actuarial experience.
- Proven experience in employee benefit or pension valuations under IAS 19 or a comparable accounting standard.
- Familiarity with end of service benefit valuations across multiple Middle East jurisdictions, including an understanding of how local labor laws influence benefit structures.
- Demonstrated ability to build actuarial models from the ground up rather than solely relying on existing templates.
- Proficiency in Python or a similar scripting language applied to actuarial tasks, along with advanced Excel skills including VBA/macros, Power Query, and well-structured workbooks designed for repeatability and review.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple engagements and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts to non-specialists.
- Willingness to travel periodically across the Middle East on business visas.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience in insurance reserving or IFRS 17 is advantageous but not essential.
- Background in audit or assurance work is considered beneficial.
What We Offer
- A clear career progression path from employee benefits into insurance and broader actuarial disciplines.
- Exposure to a diverse range of markets and regulatory environments across the Middle East region.
- Engagement in the full actuarial process, from model development to forming and communicating conclusions.
- A defined route to Fellowship within a growing actuarial function.
- Competitive compensation that reflects the regional scope and responsibilities of the role.
This opportunity is ideal for an actuarial professional seeking to deepen their expertise in employee benefits while gaining regional exposure and expanding their skill set within a reputable global firm.
