The Assistant Head Nurse in the Department of Paediatrics plays a vital role in ensuring high-quality patient care through effective management and coordination within the nursing team. This position involves close collaboration with physicians and nursing staff to monitor patient conditions, participate in care rounds, and respond promptly to any conflicts or crises in the patient care environment. The role also includes overseeing nursing assessments, planning patient care and health education, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives within the unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage patient care effectively by critically assessing patients and participating in multidisciplinary rounds with physicians to ensure quality care and a safe environment.
- Respond quickly and appropriately to conflicts or crises in patient care areas, ensuring all reportable incidents are communicated verbally and through shift reports to the Head Nurse Manager.
- Plan nursing care and health teaching tailored to patients’ needs, ensuring nursing assessments are completed by assigned staff according to standard procedures.
- Accurately report patients’ conditions to physicians and supervisors.
- Actively participate in quality improvement projects, nursing research, and special projects at the unit level.
- Periodically review nursing documentation related to patient care within the delegated area to maintain compliance and quality standards.
- Allocate nursing assignments regularly and during emergencies, weekends, or public holidays, matching staff skills and experience to patient care requirements.
- Assess nursing staff learning needs and provide suggestions and materials to enhance clinical learning experiences for students on the wards.
- Provide mentorship to staff and students, reinforcing the unit’s philosophy and goals to ensure cohesive team performance.
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a recognized institution; a Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred.
- Current registration with the Pakistan Nursing Council.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Safe Medication Administration, Intravenous Cannulation, and Procedural Sedation.
- Minimum of two years’ experience working as a nurse.
- Proven ability to assess, plan, and manage patient care effectively in accordance with established protocols.
- Familiarity with Quality Improvement Nursing Practice (QINP) concepts.
- Strong clinical knowledge and management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to meet stringent deadlines.
- Capability to work effectively in shifts and independently.
