Our client is a mission-driven renewable energy developer, owner, and operator focused on distributed and community-scale solar and energy storage projects across the United States. Committed to sustainable land use and environmental restoration, the company deploys clean power infrastructure to support local communities. The BESS Performance Engineer role is part of the Asset Management team, overseeing a growing portfolio of distributed generation assets. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this position leads performance analysis, monitoring, and reporting for standalone Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and AC/DC-coupled PV + BESS assets. The role involves close collaboration with Data Science and Asset Management teams to define key performance indicators, optimize operational efficiency, and provide data-driven insights to operations, maintenance, engineering, and project management teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead monitoring, performance analysis, and operational reporting for a portfolio of standalone BESS and paired solar + storage assets.
- Establish, calculate, and track critical BESS KPIs such as Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE), State of Health (SOH), auxiliary power consumption, availability, and State of Charge (SOC) management.
- Conduct advanced degradation modeling and develop predictive analytics to forecast battery life, monitor SOH trajectories relative to capacity guarantees, and optimize charging/discharging cycles.
- Extract, clean, and analyze large-scale SCADA and telemetry datasets to diagnose underperformance and component failures.
- Collaborate with Data Scientists to integrate BESS telemetry into enterprise platforms, structure data storage, and automate reporting pipelines.
- Utilize Generative AI tools and large language models (LLMs) to accelerate code development, automate data workflows, and streamline complex analytics.
- Model and assess performance impacts during transitions between standalone BESS and AC/DC-coupled BESS + PV configurations.
- Present operational findings, performance metrics, and recommended corrective actions or dispatch strategies to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience in performance engineering, battery modeling, or data analytics focused on energy storage systems.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline.
- Strong understanding of battery energy storage architecture, degradation mechanisms, and performance modeling, including AC and DC electric power systems.
- Proficiency in Python, R, or SQL for time-series data manipulation and modeling.
- Hands-on experience with AI development tools such as Claude Code and LLMs to enhance workflow automation and code development.
- Familiarity with analytical libraries and business intelligence tools like Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, Power BI, and Tableau.
- Proven experience working with SCADA, Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), and discrete event data for plant performance evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience in renewable energy, specifically evaluating distributed generation or utility-scale BESS and PV assets.
- Knowledge of financial analysis related to wholesale energy markets, ISO/RTO dispatch strategies, and Locational Marginal Pricing (LMP) optimization.
- Experience with industry SCADA/DAS platforms such as AlsoEnergy, Powerfactors, Ignition, or PI System.
- Practical skills with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), data infrastructure, and machine learning algorithms for predictive maintenance.
- Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) like Fiix, Maximo, or Sitetracker.
