NTU International is seeking a highly qualified Cancer Epidemiology Expert (Category II) to join an EU-funded project providing technical assistance to the Syrian Ministry of Health. The project focuses on strengthening institutional capacity and governance to enhance the Ministry’s performance, promote evidence-based decision-making, and support sustainable capacity development. The expert will be based in Damascus, Syria, with an indicative start date of December 9, 2026, and a 14-month contract duration.
Key Responsibilities
The Cancer Epidemiology Expert will provide technical assistance in cancer epidemiological research and population-based cancer surveillance. This includes conducting statistical analysis and translating cancer registry data into actionable public health policies and national cancer-control strategies. The expert will collaborate closely with cancer registry teams, health planners, and digital transformation units to ensure surveillance data effectively informs policy and resource allocation. Additionally, the role involves building the analytical capacity of national counterparts through structured, competency-based training and mentoring.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Master’s degree or PhD in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, or a closely related quantitative discipline. Additional training or certification in cancer epidemiology or registry-based research is strongly preferred. A minimum of eight years of professional experience in epidemiological research, disease surveillance, or biostatistical analysis is required, with at least four years specifically focused on cancer epidemiology or population-based cancer registry analysis.
Proficiency in statistical software such as R, STATA, SPSS, or SAS is essential for analyzing, modeling, and visualizing cancer surveillance data, including age-standardization and survival analysis methods. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and data visualization tools for epidemiological reporting are also necessary.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in designing and conducting descriptive and analytical epidemiological studies, including incidence, prevalence, survival, and trend analyses using registry-derived or health facility data. Experience in producing peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, or policy briefs that translate epidemiological evidence into actionable public health recommendations is highly valued.
A sound understanding of data quality assessment methods for cancer registry data—covering completeness, validity, and timeliness—is important. Familiarity with IARC/GLOBOCAN reporting standards is an advantage. Experience in capacity building through training and mentoring national counterparts is also preferred.
Language Requirements
Excellent written and spoken English is mandatory for this position. Working knowledge of Arabic is considered an advantage.
