This full-time position involves operating a water-cooled cupola furnace and related equipment to melt raw materials such as coke, slag, basalt, lime, and silica into molten mineral. The molten material is then carefully spun into mineral wool fibers through a controlled process. The role requires constant monitoring and adjustment of furnace conditions to maintain optimal melting and fiber production. All duties are performed on-site in an industrial setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the water-cooled cupola furnace by initiating the fire to melt the raw material charge.
- Monitor gauges and adjust valves to regulate water and steam pressure throughout the system.
- Observe the melting process via the furnace porthole, adjusting the airblast on the flaming coke bed to control heat intensity and ensure proper melting.
- Activate the spinning wheel to commence fiber production.
- Remove the taphole plug to allow molten material to flow into the water-cooled furnace trough, directing it over a high-pressure steam jet and into the spinning wheel for fiber formation.
- Continuously monitor the color intensity and flow of the molten stream to evaluate its suitability for fiber spinning.
- Adjust the distance between the steam ring and spinning wheel relative to the trough’s end to control the length of the spun mineral wool fibers.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience operating industrial furnaces or similar high-temperature equipment.
- Ability to accurately read and interpret gauges and control valves.
- Strong observational skills to monitor the melting process and characteristics of molten material.
- Mechanical aptitude to operate and adjust spinning equipment effectively.
- Capability to work safely in a high-heat, industrial environment.
- Commitment to full-time, on-site work.
