Aga Khan University (AKU), a distinguished international institution known for academic excellence and social impact, invites applications for the position of Dean of the newly established Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) based in Karachi, Pakistan. Founded in 1983, AKU operates across six countries with multiple campuses, hospitals, and outreach centers, serving over 3,000 students and employing more than 17,000 staff. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, launched in 2023, offers a four-year Bachelor of Studies program designed to integrate liberal arts education with AKU’s mission of social development, pluralism, and service. This leadership role provides a unique opportunity to shape interdisciplinary teaching and research that address complex global challenges while fostering collaboration across departments and external partners.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the strategic vision and development of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, aligning with AKU’s Onwards Strategic Plan (2024–2028) and Research Strategic Plan. Oversee academic programs currently offering majors in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Environmental Studies, Social Development Studies, and Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, with plans to expand into Data Sciences.

Recruit, mentor, and support faculty and students committed to equity, quality, and academic excellence. Ensure the integrity and quality of education, research, outreach, and community engagement activities within the Faculty.

Manage comprehensive budget and financial planning to secure long-term sustainability, including fundraising and alumni engagement efforts. Serve as the primary ambassador for the Faculty locally, regionally, and internationally, enhancing AKU’s reputation and fostering partnerships with AKU’s East Africa campuses and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in London.

Promote a student-centered culture that supports academic and extracurricular development, inclusivity, mental health, wellness, and work-integrated learning opportunities. Foster an institutional culture characterized by innovation, professionalism, ethics, social responsibility, and academic excellence.

Collaborate closely with university leadership, including the Provost and Board of Trustees, to realize the Faculty’s mission and strategic goals, ensuring alignment with AKU’s founding principles and commitment to sustainability and social impact.

Required Qualifications

A PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field, with eligibility for appointment at the rank of Professor preferred. Proven record of scholarly achievement and academic leadership in higher education.

Demonstrated success in managing complex academic entities, including faculty recruitment, mentoring, and governance. Strong commitment to fostering research excellence relevant to AKU’s regional and global contexts.

Experience in building and sustaining a student-focused academic environment that promotes learning, graduate training, and student well-being.

Proven ability to cultivate external relationships with donors, partners, and alumni, and to lead fundraising initiatives supporting institutional growth.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
