Electrical Estimator

The Electrical Estimator is responsible for reviewing project drawings, shop drawings, specifications, and tender documents to deliver accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for electrical systems. This role involves preparing detailed quotes, coordinating with suppliers, and ensuring all estimates comply with local laws and industry standards. The estimator plays a crucial part in supporting project bids and managing cost control throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Project Document Review:
Thoroughly review project drawings, specifications, and tender documents to understand the full scope and requirements. Identify all electrical components and systems involved, including low voltage (LV), medium voltage (MV), and extra-low voltage (ELV) systems.

Shop Drawing Preparation and Review:
Interpret, prepare, and review shop drawings after project award to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project specifications, design drawings, and applicable codes. Review buyout submittals, maintain a submittal log, and verify submittals against specifications.

Cost Estimation:
Develop detailed cost estimates covering labor, materials, equipment, taxes, and other expenses in accordance with local regulations. Ensure estimates are comprehensive, accurate, and aligned with project budgets.

Quantity Takeoff:
Perform quantity take-offs for electrical components such as lighting, switches, receptacles, panel breakers, fire alarms, CCTV systems, and electrical circuits. Work with both low voltage and medium voltage electrical systems.

Supplier Coordination:
Engage with suppliers and vendors to obtain quotations for materials, equipment, and services. Negotiate pricing to achieve the best value without compromising quality.

Bid Preparation:
Assist in preparing technical and commercial bids that meet client specifications and expectations. Ensure all necessary documentation is complete for final bid submission.

Change Orders and Plan Alterations:
Manage changes in work orders and plan revisions, adjusting bids and cost estimates accordingly. Ensure all modifications are accurately documented.

Pre-Bid Meetings:
Participate in pre-bid meetings with clients, engineers, and contractors to clarify project scope and deliverables. Provide technical clarifications and address questions during the bidding process.

Code and Compliance:
Ensure all electrical systems, materials, and designs comply with relevant local and national codes, standards, and regulations. Stay updated on changes in standards such as NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and UL listings to maintain ongoing compliance.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as an electrical estimator or in a similar role.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems and components, including lighting, switches, receptacles, panel breakers, fire alarms, CCTV, electrical circuits, and conduits/fittings.
- Familiarity with American wiring systems and standards such as NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and UL.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Plan Swift, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Excel for estimating and project management.
- Excellent analytical skills to assess project requirements accurately.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English to effectively liaise with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
