The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Karachi, Pakistan, is seeking a Head Nurse for its Department of Surgery. AKUH is a renowned not-for-profit healthcare institution offering comprehensive medical services across Pakistan, including tertiary and secondary care hospitals, numerous medical centers, clinical laboratories, pharmacies, and home healthcare services. The hospital is recognized for its commitment to quality and patient safety, holding accreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The Department of Surgery at AKUH provides a wide range of specialized surgical care with a dedicated team of over 120 faculty members involved in teaching, research, and clinical services.

Key Responsibilities

The Head Nurse will oversee 24/7 staffing schedules to ensure adherence to hospital standards for quality and safe patient care, remaining available to cover shifts as required. This role demands excellent management skills to guarantee timely physician rounds, continuous patient monitoring, and strict compliance with prescribed treatment regimens. The Head Nurse will engage regularly with patients and their families to address complaints and resolve concerns related to care. Collaboration with support service departments is essential to maintain high-quality patient services. Additionally, the role involves working with multidisciplinary teams on quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing unit processes. The Head Nurse will establish and monitor unit-based standards, goals, and priorities, ensuring they align with hospital expectations. Encouraging creativity, initiative, and innovation among nursing staff is vital, alongside mentoring and supporting workforce development to maintain excellent service delivery.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (BScN) from an accredited institution, with a preference for those possessing a Master’s degree in Nursing. A valid license from the Pakistan Nursing Council is mandatory. Applicants should have a minimum of four years of relevant nursing experience, including at least two years in a nursing management role. Certifications required include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Safe Medication Administration, Aseptic Techniques, Intravenous (I/V) Cannulation, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict deadlines. Candidates must also be willing to work in shifts covering mornings, evenings, and nights.
