Lead Architect

We are seeking a Lead Architect to build and scale our engineering organisation as Beam grows. In this role, you will lead engineering managers who oversee our squads, empowering them with ownership and ensuring teams can deliver solutions from customer problem through to release and production. You will be responsible for engineering delivery, hiring, team structure, and collaborating with Product and leadership to prioritize work and manage capacity.

You will remain hands-on with technical work—reviewing designs, diving into code when necessary, diagnosing production issues, and asking critical questions teams might overlook. Using AI-assisted coding tools yourself, you will champion their adoption across engineering to improve how we build software.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead engineering efforts across multiple product areas, owning delivery and production quality.
- Develop engineering leads to make technical decisions, manage teams, and deliver results.
- Design and evolve team structures, hiring to meet growing product needs.
- Collaborate with Product to translate priorities into achievable plans, resolve trade-offs, and ensure follow-through post-release.
- Guide technical direction across squads, especially on architecture, reliability, and security impacting multiple teams.
- Identify bottlenecks and improve development, testing, and deployment processes.
- Integrate practical AI-assisted development into daily workflows with appropriate quality and reliability checks.

Required Qualifications

- Extensive experience building software and leading engineering teams, including managing multiple team leads.
- Proven ability to build or reshape an engineering organisation while maintaining product delivery.
- Strong hands-on technical skills, capable of reviewing code, evaluating architectural trade-offs, and troubleshooting complex failures.
- Track record of mentoring engineers into leadership roles responsible for people and delivery.
- Experience owning software products beyond launch, focusing on reliability and continuous improvement in production.
- Sound judgment balancing speed, foundational investments, and course corrections.
- Current, practical use of AI coding tools and experience enabling others to use them effectively.

Preferred Qualifications and Benefits

Experience with TypeScript/Node.js, React/Next.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, event-driven systems, or cloud infrastructure is beneficial but not mandatory. Background in building AI products or software for enterprise customers is also valuable.
