Smart Working is seeking a Lead Symfony & PHP Software Engineer to join our remote-first team. This role focuses on designing, building, and maintaining the core backend systems of our products. You will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers within an Agile environment to deliver scalable and reliable features that address real-world challenges. This position is ideal for someone passionate about clean code, leading technical discussions, mentoring peers, and delivering thoroughly tested solutions aligned with business objectives. Please note, candidates must have proven Symfony experience; Laravel-only experience will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop backend features that align with business goals and customer needs.
- Maintain and enhance test coverage using PHPUnit.
- Build scalable, testable APIs and backend systems.
- Write clean, maintainable code adhering to quality standards.
- Review requirements and provide technical input and feedback.
- Collaborate closely with product, design, and QA teams to ensure seamless delivery.
- Monitor systems and respond to incidents as part of a rotating on-call schedule.
- Break down complex projects into manageable tasks and guide team members through implementation.
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive feedback.
- Continuously improve development processes and suggest technical enhancements.
- Follow secure coding practices to ensure code is free from known vulnerabilities.
- Document features, processes, and system architecture for team-wide knowledge sharing.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience working with PHP.
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience with Symfony framework.
- 2+ years of experience writing unit tests using PHPUnit.
- Strong communication skills, capable of working effectively within cross-functional teams.
- Solid experience with MongoDB database management.
- Proficient understanding of Object-Oriented Design Patterns.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with JavaScript frameworks and libraries such as React, Node.js, and/or TypeScript.
- Experience working with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipeline workflows and automation.
