HMF Project Management and Consultants Ltd is looking for a Senior SCADA Engineer to join its engineering team in Pakistan and support the UK-based SCADA and Real Time Systems group on significant SSEN Transmission and Distribution projects. This role offers the chance to work directly on UK power utility projects alongside experienced engineers, focusing on SCADA design, substation automation, system integration, testing, and commissioning support. The position is office-based in Karachi, Lahore, or Islamabad, requiring at least four hours of daily overlap with UK working hours.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop SCADA and substation automation architectures for transmission and distribution substations.
- Engineer IEC 61850 systems, including SCD, ICD, CID, GOOSE, and MMS configurations.
- Configure RTUs, gateways, bay controllers, station HMIs, and protocol converters.
- Design industrial communication networks covering VLANs, IP addressing, redundancy, and network segmentation.
- Apply operational technology (OT) cybersecurity principles such as firewall rules and secure remote access.
- Work with protocols including IEC 60870-5-101/104, DNP3, and Modbus.
- Develop SCADA databases, HMI displays, alarm lists, and control logic.
- Produce technical specifications, network diagrams, signal lists, and I/O schedules.
- Prepare Factory Acceptance Test (FAT), Site Acceptance Test (SAT), and point-to-point test documentation.
- Support technical reviews, FAT preparation, and remote troubleshooting during testing and commissioning phases.
- Collaborate closely with the UK engineering team to deliver high-quality, technically robust engineering packages.
Required Qualifications
- Over 10 years of experience in SCADA design and development within power utilities, substations, or utility-scale energy projects.
- Strong understanding of SCADA architectures, control philosophies, interlocking, redundancy, and failover mechanisms.
- Hands-on experience with IEC 61850 engineering.
- Proficiency in IEC 60870-5-101/104 and DNP3 protocols.
- Experience configuring multiple SCADA and OEM platforms.
- Solid knowledge of industrial networking, including managed switches, VLANs, routing, PRP/HSR, RSTP, and time synchronization.
- Working knowledge of OT cybersecurity and IEC 62443 standards.
- Proven ability to prepare detailed technical documentation and engineering deliverables.
- Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Control, or Computer Engineering.
- Excellent written and spoken English skills, enabling effective collaboration with UK-based teams.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
- Experience working with UK utilities, especially SSEN or other UK network operators.
- Familiarity with multi-vendor SCADA system integration.
- Knowledge of ENA specifications, NIS Regulations, and the NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework.
- Experience with Fortinet or Palo Alto Networks cybersecurity solutions.
- Exposure to renewable energy and storage projects, including solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), wind, and PPC interfaces.
- Relevant vendor, networking, or cybersecurity certifications.
- Registration with the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
