Software Engineer - Android

Based in Karachi, Pakistan, this role is critical to Bykea’s mission of moving people, parcels, and payments seamlessly across Pakistan through its mobile app. The Android application is one of the most heavily used and high-impact components of the platform, requiring robust performance across a wide range of devices—from flagship smartphones to older budget models—and in challenging network conditions. This position calls for a skilled Android engineer who will take ownership of the app’s development, ensuring it not only functions but excels in real-world usage. Unlike roles focused solely on delivering features, this position involves close collaboration with product and engineering teams to define, build, and maintain a high-quality, reliable app experience.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Build for the Android Platform: Develop applications that run efficiently on diverse Android devices, including phones and tablets, accounting for extensive OS and hardware fragmentation. The focus is on real users’ devices, not just ideal test environments.

Own Performance, Quality, and Responsiveness: Take full responsibility for the app’s performance by identifying and resolving bottlenecks, fixing bugs, and optimizing for real-world scenarios such as offline storage, threading, and power consumption. Ensuring the app is smooth and battery-friendly is essential.

Collaborate to Define and Ship Features: Partner with product managers and engineers to ideate, design, and implement new features. Your insights on feasibility and value will shape the product roadmap, rather than simply executing predefined specifications.

Connect the App to the Real World: Integrate the app with backend services via RESTful APIs and utilize frameworks such as Google Maps, GPS optimization, Room database, and cloud messaging/push notifications. This integration transforms the app from a user interface into a dependable tool for users’ daily needs.

Keep the Codebase Healthy: Maintain high standards in code quality, organization, and automation. Proper use of version control and adherence to best practices are expected to ensure long-term maintainability.

Required Qualifications

- 4 to 5 years of hands-on experience in Android development.
- At least 2 years of experience working with Jetpack libraries, particularly Jetpack Compose for UI development.
- Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, and SQL.
- Practical experience with Android frameworks such as Google Maps, GPS optimization, and Room database.
- Strong understanding of offline storage, threading, and performance tuning.
- Familiarity with RESTful APIs for backend integration.
- Ability to benchmark and optimize app performance effectively.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with experience in scaled startup environments is a plus.
- Curiosity and passion for learning new technologies beyond just using them.
- Analytical skills to write and discuss efficient algorithms.
- Competence in using AI and automation tools to enhance productivity across coding, code review, documentation, research, and testing. Candidates should have at least one year of experience leveraging these tools and understand their strengths and limitations.
