With over 50 million users, Speechify’s text-to-speech products transform PDFs, books, Google Docs, news articles, and websites into audio, enabling users to read faster, retain more, and access content effortlessly. The Platform team at Speechify is responsible for the backend systems that power all of Speechify’s offerings. This includes the public text-to-speech (TTS) API, payment processing, subscriptions, authentication, consumption tracking, and analytics, supporting millions of users across multiple platforms. These systems demand precision and reliability, as subscription states must remain consistent across five clients and two app-store billing systems, while consumption metering must be both accurate and cost-effective. The public TTS API also serves external customers who depend on its uptime and low latency. The role emphasizes building robust systems that minimize manual intervention over time, fostering growth through ownership and continuous improvement in a flat organizational structure.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain APIs related to payments, subscriptions, authentication, consumption tracking, and the public TTS API.
- Improve existing services by enhancing their performance, reducing costs, and increasing reliability.
- Ensure changes are thoroughly validated before deployment and implement safeguards to maintain correctness after release.
- Automate repetitive tasks within your role to free up capacity for higher-impact work.
- Create reusable solutions that can be adopted by the entire team.
- Design B2B and enterprise integrations to support customers building on Speechify’s platform.
- Collaborate closely with product, mobile, and web teams to align backend architecture with evolving product needs.

Required Qualifications

- Proven backend development experience using TypeScript and Node.js.
- Direct experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP); familiarity with AWS, Azure, or other cloud providers is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to delegate ownership of tasks and systems effectively, with tangible results.
- Experience working with AI agents in a daily workflow, including clear understanding of automation boundaries and manual review processes.
- Strong analytical skills with the habit of verifying outcomes against system-level data such as logs, database states, and actual requests rather than summaries.
- Good judgment in deciding what not to build, with clear communication on those decisions.
- Openness to feedback and a preference for being corrected over insisting on being right.
