Solar Design & Estimation Engineer

Yellowlite is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Solar Design & Estimation Engineer to support residential and commercial solar projects across the U.S. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in solar PV system design, material take-offs (MTO/BOQ), cost estimation, and technical proposal preparation. This role requires close collaboration with Sales, Engineering, Proposal, Permitting, and Project Management teams to deliver accurate, cost-effective, and compliant solar solutions.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop precise solar PV system designs using tools such as Aurora Solar, HelioScope, AutoCAD, and other relevant software.
- Prepare detailed material take-offs (MTO/BOQ) including solar panels, inverters, mounting structures, electrical equipment, and balance-of-system (BOS) components.
- Create comprehensive project cost estimates, pricing calculations, and labor and material cost assumptions.
- Review site surveys, satellite imagery, electrical drawings, and customer requirements to produce feasible and optimized solar designs.
- Prepare and review system layouts, single-line diagrams (SLDs), equipment specifications, and technical documentation.
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable U.S. electrical codes (NEC), utility requirements, and industry standards.
- Support residential and commercial solar proposals by providing accurate technical and financial estimates.
- Coordinate with internal teams to clarify project scope, pricing requirements, and design specifications.
- Identify potential design issues, material needs, scope gaps, and project risks early in the process.
- Maintain estimating templates, pricing references, and equipment databases to ensure consistency and accuracy.
- Incorporate design revisions based on feedback from clients, engineering teams, utilities, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
- Deliver accurate designs and estimates on time while maintaining high quality standards.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
- Proven experience in solar PV design, cost estimation, and material take-offs (MTO/BOQ).
- Proficiency in Aurora Solar, HelioScope, AutoCAD, MS Excel, or similar design and estimation tools.
- Strong understanding of solar PV components, electrical systems, and design principles.
- Working knowledge of U.S. solar design standards and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings, site information, technical specifications, and project documentation.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and estimation skills.
- High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and coordination skills to work collaboratively across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous experience working on U.S.-based residential or commercial solar projects.
- Experience preparing both technical and commercial solar proposals.
- Familiarity with U.S. utility requirements, AHJ approvals, and solar permitting processes.
