We are seeking a detail-oriented and skilled Tooling Engineer to join our team onsite in Lahore, working the night shift. This role involves the design, development, and continuous improvement of progressive stamping dies, welding and fabrication fixtures, assembly jigs, checking fixtures, and other production tooling primarily for automotive and heavy manufacturing applications. The ideal candidate will have strong 3D CAD skills, practical knowledge of tooling and manufacturing processes, proficiency in GD&T, and excellent problem-solving abilities. Effective communication in English is essential to collaborate with cross-functional teams and support our North American automotive clients.
Key Responsibilities
Stamping Tooling - Automotive:
Develop progressive stamping strip layouts for sheet-metal automotive components, considering part geometry, forming requirements, and production feasibility. Plan station sequencing, nesting, material utilization, and progression through cutting and forming operations. Perform engineering calculations such as tonnage, cutting and forming forces, and die balance. Design and detail progressive die components including punches, die blocks, strippers, pads, guides, and retainers. Support die tryout and troubleshooting activities, addressing spring-back correction, clearance adjustments, dimensional improvements, and production-related tooling issues.
Welding & Assembly Tooling - Automotive:
Design spot and MIG welding fixtures, assembly jigs, checking fixtures, and gauges for stamped automotive parts and assemblies. Develop robust locating schemes using component datums, RPS principles, net pads, locating pins, and pin-and-slot arrangements. Design mechanical and pneumatic locating and clamping systems considering part loading/unloading, weld gun access, weld sequence, ergonomics, and maintainability. Apply GD&T and dimensional requirements to ensure repeatable part location, orientation, and assembly accuracy. Support fixture tryout, buy-off, first-article inspection, dimensional validation, and design modifications.
Fabrication & Machining Tooling - Heavy Machinery:
Design weld fixtures, assembly jigs, and machining fixtures for large fabricated structures such as frames, booms, buckets, tanks, and agricultural implements. Develop rigid tooling solutions that address welding distortion, pre-camber, weld sequence, thermal effects, and dimensional stability. Incorporate positioners, crane access, lifting and handling requirements, operator access, and safe loading/unloading into tooling designs. Create practical, modular, and adjustable tooling suitable for high-mix, low-volume fabrication environments.
Tooling Design & Documentation:
Develop complete 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings for dies, fixtures, jigs, gauges, and related tooling components. Apply GD&T, fits, tolerances, and basic tolerance stack-up principles to achieve dimensional accuracy and repeatability. Select appropriate standard tooling components, locating devices, clamps, cylinders, fasteners, and commercially available parts where applicable. Maintain accurate tooling documentation and update revisions based on tryout, manufacturing, quality, and production feedback.
Tooling Optimization & Continuous Improvement:
Review existing tooling to identify opportunities for improving cycle time, ergonomics, accessibility, reliability, maintainability, quality, and manufacturing cost. Troubleshoot tooling-related production and dimensional issues, determine root causes, and develop practical corrective actions. Support tooling standardization, cost reduction, and continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Project Support:
Collaborate closely with manufacturing, production, quality, maintenance, machining, welding, tool rooms, and engineering teams throughout tooling design, tryout, and implementation phases. Communicate tooling concepts, technical requirements, design changes, and project status clearly to internal and external stakeholders. Manage multiple tooling projects and design revisions simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards.
Required Qualifications
Education: Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE) in Mechanical or Tool & Die Making from a recognized board; or B.Tech, BS, BE, or BSc in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience: 2-4 years of relevant experience in tooling design, fixture design, die design, fabrication, automotive manufacturing, or heavy machinery.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or Fusion 360. Strong understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T, fits, tolerances, and tolerance stack-up. Good knowledge of progressive stamping, sheet-metal forming, welding, machining, and fabrication processes. Practical understanding of fixture locating and clamping principles, RPS/datums, progressive die components, and tooling design fundamentals. Familiarity with pneumatic clamping systems, standard tooling components, and tooling tryout or buy-off activities is preferred. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to troubleshoot tooling and production issues. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
Working hours are from 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM (Monday to Friday) to support North American clients. The position offers a market-competitive salary and a performance-based bonus at year-end. The role is based onsite in DHA Phase 8, Lahore.
