Behavior of Backfill Materials for Electrical Grounding under High Voltage

This thesis comprises of portable electrical grounding system for the safe operation of electrical system and also to avoid the fatal accident related to electrical surges arises from fault current and lightning strokes. Electrical grounding is essential part of power system for safe operations. Grounding system is mainly affected by grounding resistance and nature of soil; backfilling materials work effectively in lowering the grounding resistance and also fill the void spaces in between materials. In this thesis Bentonite is used as backfilling and successful experiments are conducted to achieve a desired level of confidence to design a mixture of compounds to be used as good grounding system. During lightning strikes or short circuit surge arises grounding system should be capable of handling high current for short or prolong period of time. This thesis investigates the behavior of Bentonite and cement on refined sand and lime under alternating, direct and impulse voltages. The electrical grounding system is made portable to provide low and acceptable resistance path for terrains where soil is not suitable for grounding system like forests, deserts and normal surfaces. The portable earthing system can be apply to railway systems, air aviation systems and military sectors particularly for electronic equipment zero referencing.
