Ammonia is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3. Ammonia is a colourless alkaline gas, and is lighter than air. It is normally encountered as a gas with a characteristic pungent odour. Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous. Traces of ammonia and ammonium compounds can be found in the atmosphere and in natural water and also in the soil. Ammonia contributes significantly to the nutritional needs of terrestrial organisms by serving as a precursor to foodstuffs and fertilizers. Ammonia is a chemical that is widely used in many industries. In fact, it is one of the most important chemical and raw material used in the industry. Ammonia, either directly or indirectly, is also a building block for the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals. In 2006, worldwide production was estimated at 146.5 million tons. It is also used in commercial cleaning products.
