 Corrosion behavior of welded alpha titanium alloy (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) in salin

The objective of this project was to check the corrosion behaviour of alpha titanium alloy (Ti-5Al-2.5Sn) in Saline water. Two different welding techniques were performed such as TIG and E-Beam on alpha titanium samples and their comparison was noticed. The comparison not only helped us in determining the corrosion rate but it also gave us a slight glimpse about the residual stresses that were generated due to heating/welding. Different tests were formed in order to find the corrosion behaviour. Initially the TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welded sample was mounted and grinding was formed on different grit size papers. Polishing was followed by grinding and Kroll’s reagent was applied on the sample. Optical images were taken to distinguish different zones build within the sample. E-Beam samples were initially wire cut using EDM wire cutting machine and they were also mounted. Grinding, polishing was done and Kroll’s reagent was applied to find the microstructures. Both welded alpha titanium samples were prepared for the corrosion test using Gamry Potentiostat. The samples were soldered first and dipped in saline solution for calculation of corrosion rate. SEM was performed on the samples followed by micro hardness Tests. From all these results, we concluded the factors contributing towards corrosion and corrosion behaviour of each welded alpha titanium sample
