Mechanical defects analysis through replica based microscopy

This project discusses the applications of a system of producing replica to non-destructive metallography and non-destructive analysis of surface features. The replicas were produced by different companies and are known as Repliset and Microset. Mechanical defects can be analyzed through a replica based microscopy. Non-destructive metallurgy of surface makes it possible to analyze a materials microstructure and surface condition as well as crakes, damage and surface finish. Replicas can be applied on surface analysis, at normal and elevated temperature. Replica (silicon rubber) should be capable of flexible, high-resolution capturing of surface image. A replica is produced, which is then observed with electronic microscope (SEM) in a laboratory to inspect. Replication of a surface can involve either direct or indirect methods. In the direct, or single-stage, method, a replica is made of the specimen surface and subsequently examined in the microscope, while in the indirect method; the final replica is taken from an earlier primary replica of the specimen surface. Replication is being employed as a means of inspecting critical engineering surface examined microscopically. Particularly in the field of aerospace, marine engineering and nuclear power employ Microset in various applications.
