Protection Scheme of three phase Induction Motor using numerical relay

Abstract Protection of a three phase induction motor against possible faults such as over-voltage, under- voltage, Single Phasing, Unbalance voltage, Phase Reversal, over loading and Lock Rotor during the course of its operation is very crucial as it is an integral and extensively used part of industrial machinery. The design and operation algorithm for the protection of Induction Motor against all these faults is done using a microcontroller and GSM. Various fault conditions for relay operation are realized by calculating the values of V and I during the fault condition. The signals are taken from the supply line, in the form of analog and fed to a microcontroller that is programmed to estimate the values of V and I. RPM of motor is measured using Hall Effect Sensor. Temperature of motor is measured using Temperature Sensor (LM35). Calculated values of V and I are compared with set values to decide about the action to be taken. Microcontroller based protection provides higher accuracy, efficiency and safety compared with classical protection techniques. GSM is used to monitor the values of different parameters under normal and abnormal conditions and to on off the motor under abnormal conditions.
