We are looking for a capable Assistant Manager – Logistics to manage and support our self-trucking operations across the UK and Europe. This role involves overseeing daily transport activities such as coordinating drivers and vehicles, managing container movements, ensuring fleet maintenance, maintaining compliance, and controlling transport costs for both domestic UK and European routes. The successful candidate will be instrumental in driving efficient, cost-effective logistics operations while upholding high standards of service and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Coordinate daily trucking operations throughout the UK and European countries, ensuring smooth and timely transport activities. Plan and monitor container collections, deliveries, and empty returns at UK and European ports, warehouses, and fulfilment centres. Manage tractor units, skeletal trailers, and drivers for domestic UK and cross-border European movements. Develop efficient routes and schedules that consider driver hours, ferry and Eurotunnel crossings, tolls, port appointments, and delivery requirements. Liaise regularly with ports, shipping lines, warehouses, customers, and transport partners across the UK and Europe to maintain seamless operations. Oversee driver schedules, monitor performance, and ensure adherence to all relevant regulations. Monitor vehicle availability and condition, including servicing, maintenance, MOT/PMI, tyre status, and breakdown management. Track GPS and telematics data, fuel consumption, mileage, and overall fleet utilization to optimize performance. Support compliance with Operator License requirements and European transport regulations. Arrange third-party transport services when necessary, managing service levels and costs effectively. Manage demurrage, detention, and other additional transport-related expenses. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for drivers, vehicles, and transport activities. Prepare regular reports detailing operational performance, fleet status, and cost management. Identify opportunities to improve fleet utilization, reduce costs, and minimize empty mileage across UK and European operations. Assist the Transport/Logistics Manager in expanding the company’s self-trucking network and fleet within the UK and Europe.
Required Qualifications
A minimum of 2-3 years’ experience in transport, fleet management, or logistics operations is essential. Candidates should have a strong background in trucking operations and a good understanding of transport compliance and Operator License requirements. Experience with GPS/telematics, transport management systems, and fleet planning tools is necessary. Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills are required. The ability to manage time-sensitive transport operations across multiple locations in the UK and Europe is critical.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with European road transport and UK–Europe cross-border movements is highly desirable. Familiarity with container haulage and port operations will be advantageous. Knowledge of European transport regulations is preferred.
