Job Summary
The Canteen Supervisor will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the canteen, ensuring all activities comply with food safety and hygiene standards while providing exceptional customer service. This role requires overseeing staff and volunteers, managing food preparation and service, maintaining inventory, and upholding a clean and safe environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organizational and leadership skills, along with a positive and inclusive approach to foster a welcoming atmosphere for both patrons and team members.
Key Responsibilities
The Canteen Supervisor will oversee all aspects of food preparation and service, ensuring strict adherence to hygiene and nutritional standards. They will manage stock levels by placing timely orders and maintaining accurate inventory records to avoid shortages or wastage. Supervising canteen staff and volunteers is a critical part of the role, ensuring smooth daily operations and effective teamwork.
Handling cash and EFTPOS transactions accurately, as well as reconciling daily takings, will be part of the financial responsibilities. The supervisor will also maintain cleanliness throughout the canteen and ensure compliance with food safety and workplace health regulations at all times.
In collaboration with management, the supervisor may develop and update menus to meet nutritional guidelines and customer preferences. Promoting a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all patrons and staff is essential, encouraging positive interactions and a supportive workplace culture.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have previous experience in food service or hospitality, with supervisory experience preferred. A basic understanding of nutrition and food safety regulations is necessary to maintain compliance and quality standards.
Strong organizational and time management skills are essential to handle multiple responsibilities efficiently. The ability to lead and motivate a small team effectively is critical for maintaining high performance and morale.
Possession of a current Food Safety Certificate or First Aid certification is preferred, or the willingness to obtain these qualifications promptly is required. A friendly and positive attitude combined with excellent interpersonal skills will help in creating a pleasant environment for both staff and customers.
Preferred Qualifications and Benefits
Experience working in a factory or community canteen environment is advantageous, as it provides relevant context for the role. Knowledge of budgeting and cost control principles will support effective financial management of the canteen.
A Bachelor’s degree is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates with at least one year of experience as a Canteen Supervisor will be highly regarded.
