Working as a politician’s assistant you will provide administrative support to a politician You will help with secretarial tasks, research and publicity
You may be referred to as a assistant to politician, a parliamentary or constituency assistant (depending on where you have based), a personal assistant (PA) or an executive officer
Although job titles and location vary with the basic task to do whatever behind-the-scene work is necessary to enable politician to represent their constituent. The Politician generally have a very qualified executive officer or personal assistant
RESPONSIBILTIES
· Respond to enquiries – known as progressive casework – from constituent, other politicians, the media, lobbyist and pressure groups
· Perform secretarial task such as managing the politician’s diary, making travel arrangements and taking minutes at meeting
· Undertake all administrative duties such as filing, ordering stationery, responding to corresponding and updating database
· Carry out research into local, regional, national and international issues as required and ensure the politician is made aware of the relevant matters
· Arrange surgeries for constituents and offer support on the day
· Write press releases, newsletters and mailshots to promote politician’s work update their website
· Assist with campaigns before and during elections
· Provide administrative support in relation to expenses and help deal with budges
· Attend public and private functions and sometimes stand in when politician is unable to attend
· Liaison with members of government and local government, party headquarters, other politicians and their staff, embassies, commissioners, relative interest groups, the media, relevant voluntary section organization and constituents
· Help draft amendments for reports and prepare briefing material
· provide politician with support needed to get issue on their agenda e.g research or liaison with key individuals or groups
