Substitute Math Teacher

Spirit of Math is a Canadian based after-school-school for high achieving students in mathematics. Spirit of Math has been operating in Canada for over 25 years with 8000+ students and 43 campuses, with one in the United States. All of our classes run in the afternoon, after day school hours. Substitute Teachers selected to teach with Spirit of Math are provided with paid training before they begin, as well as ongoing professional development each year that they continue to teach with Spirit of Math. Because of this exceptional training many of our teachers are highly sought after by school boards and private schools. A Substitute Teacher shall complete all the functions of a regular Teacher when the Teacher is absent from work.

Personal Qualities:

Spirit of Math teachers must have a lot of confidence in themselves to talk to parents and to promote confidence in the students. Typically, they are flexible, independent, detail-oriented and want to stick to a system. SMS teachers are professional and accountable.

Decision-Making Ability:

The Teacher should have the capacity to achieve objectives that could take up to 6 months to execute.

Work Values:

The Teacher should value:

• Working with others and promote it whenever possible.

• Team work and have an innate need to help others.

• An SMS teacher is a life-long learner who wants to do extra professional development whenever possible. They also want to help their fellow teachers with their PD.

The SMS environment is one in which everyone acknowledges that they are continually learning. This person must want to keep learning.

Skilled Knowledge & Experience:

The Teacher should have the following skilled knowledge and experience:

• Experience in an atmosphere with high-achieving youth is an asset

• Ability to follow a curriculum

• Highly-motivated to understand student needs

• Organization

Education:

A degree or diploma from a recognized college or university. A Bachelor of Education is an asset, but not necessary.

Accountabilities:

The Teacher will report to the Principal and is accountable for the following:

Class Preparation

(a) Following the lessons plan as established by the regular teacher.

(b) If given enough notice, receiving the lesson plans, student handouts, class list, and any other necessary supplies no later than the day before the class, in order to prepare properly;

(c) Arriving at least 30 minutes before class time to ensure that the classroom is set-up appropriately and to be available to supervise and give help to students. Photocopying and other preparation should be completed prior to this.

(d) Any large amounts of photocopying will be done at the office.

Administration

(a) Keeping an up-to-date record of attendance on file at the School.

(b) Responding promptly to emails and phone calls on matters related to the School.

Parent Communication

(a) Responding promptly to emails and phone calls on matters related to the students.

(b) If teaching 2 or more consecutive weeks of the same class, marking all assignments to be ready to hand out at the beginning of the next week
