About the role:

A Thematic Lead for WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) is responsible for providing technical leadership and guidance in the implementation of WASH projects and initiatives. He/She is responsible for designing, planning, implementing, and monitoring WASH Projects, and ensuring compliance with project objectives, donor requirements, and national/international standards.

Your impactful goals will include:

  • Developing WASH strategies and plans: The thematic lead WASH is responsible for developing and implementing WASH strategies and plans in line with the organization & overall objectives.
  • Ensuring programme quality: The thematic lead WASH must ensure that the WASH programme or project meets quality standards and that it is delivered effectively and efficiently.
  • Leading and managing the WASH team: The thematic lead WASH is responsible for leading and managing the WASH team, including providing technical guidance and support, managing team performance, and building team capacity.
  • Building partnerships and networks: The thematic lead WASH must establish and maintain partnerships and networks with key stakeholders, including donors, government agencies, NGOs, and communities.
  • Providing technical expertise: The thematic lead WASH is responsible for providing technical expertise and guidance on WASH-related issues, including water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion.
  • Monitoring and evaluation: The thematic lead WASH must monitor and evaluate the progress of the WASH programme or project and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Advocacy and communications: The thematic lead WASH must advocate for WASH-related issues and communicate effectively with stakeholders, including raising awareness of the importance of WASH issues.

What we are looking for:

Education & Knowledge

  • Masters Degree in a relevant field such as Water Resources Management, Environmental Sciences, or Public Health.
  • Good understanding of the technical aspects of WASH, including water supply, sanitation, and hygiene promotion.
  • Familiar with relevant policies, guidelines, and standards related to WASH.
  • Strong Technical Background in WASH.

Work Experience

  • 5 – 6 years of professional experience in the field of WASH, Ideally in a leadership role.

Functional Competencies/Skills

Technical expertise:

  • A strong technical understanding of water, sanitation, and hygiene is crucial to succeeding as a thematic lead in WASH. This includes knowledge of relevant technologies, policies, and regulations.

Project management:

  • The ability to plan, execute, and monitor WASH projects is essential.
  • Project management skills include budgeting, resource allocation, risk management, and stakeholder engagement.

Leadership:

  • Thematic leads in WASH must be able to provide leadership to their teams and inspire others to achieve goals.
  • This includes the ability to communicate effectively, delegate tasks, and provide guidance and support.

Collaboration and teamwork:

  • WASH projects often involve multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and local communities. The ability to collaborate effectively with these groups is essential.

Problem-solving:

  • The ability to identify and solve problems is important for thematic lead in WASH. This includes the ability to analyze complex data, make decisions based on incomplete information, and implement innovative solutions.

Monitoring and evaluation:

  • The ability to monitor and evaluate the impact of WASH projects is important. This includes developing indicators, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting results to stakeholders.

Cultural competence:

  • WASH projects often take place in culturally diverse settings. The ability to understand and respect different cultures and beliefs is important to succeed in this role.

Adaptability:

  • WASH projects can face unforeseen challenges, such as natural disasters or political instability. Thematic lead must be able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and adjust project plans accordingly.
