Shabana worked for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as a Protection Assistant in Karachi. She is mainly responsible for managing two centres, providing technical and professional support to the staff of the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees (CAR) and the National Database & Registration Authority (NADRA). Besides, she facilitated and supported the Afghan refugees as per UNHCR guidelines to achieve the targets and objectives of the Documentation Renewal and Information Verification Exercise (DRIVE).
Ms Shabana Kori is a skilled community development professional with a dedicated approach to sustainable development and human rights. Ms Kori possesses a master’s degree in mass communication. She has worked for various projects funded by international development organizations, United Nation's agencies, and Government.
In her early career, she coordinated for a project on Promoting Human Rights funded by CARE International and Communication Officer for UNICEF funded project on education-based at Hyderabad with Strengthening Participatory Organization (SPO).
She sustained her career and worked as Programme Officer with Society for environmental actions, reconstruction and humanitarian response (SEARCH), she designed campaigns on seed and food rights for the organization and implemented campaign activities at the national level with the partnership of Action Aid Pakistan and Oxfam-GB. She ensured the participation of all relevant stakeholders throughout the campaign.
Ms Kori also managed national-level project empowerment of women for the reduction of Gender-based violence funded by TroCaire as Project Manager with Sindh development Society (SDS). Besides being the project manager, she also designed other projects for the organization and facilitated international delegations and presented organization work at various platforms.
Ms Kori has worked with Sindh Education Foundation-Government of Sindh as Jr. Programme Officer and was mainly responsible for school management, development of training manuals and school curriculum, organization communication with partners, and development of case studies, report writing and data management.
Ms Shabana has extensive field experience in remote areas of Sindh includes Coastal areas, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Kohistan, Kachho, and north parts of Sindh province. She has worked with Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam as Field Coordinator for UN FAO supported research assignment in SUCCESS and ILTS focused eight districts of Sindh, Pakistan.
As a monitoring and research expert, she worked with Karwan e Hayat in Karachi as a senior MEAL officer and successfully implemented all the SoPs and designed various monitoring tools for the organisation.
The Protection Assistant is a member of the UNHCR team, support DRIVE at the two dedicated registration centres in Karachi, Pakistan. She is being supervised by a UNHCR staff member in the office of the Terms of Reference assignment (Karachi).
The Protection Assistant is responsible for supporting UNHCR protection oversight and specific activities within the registration centres, working closely with Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees (CAR) in assisting refugees through the documentation verification undertaken by NADRA. This includes functions to help ensure and maintain a protective reception where refugees are welcomed, and that the verification process is undertaken in a calm and friendly environment.
The Protection Assistant is a first responder to queries from the refugees regarding the verification procedure at the same time providing special attention to those refugee individuals and families that require guidance and assurance. Special care is to be provided to the elderly, persons with disabilities, very large families and/or families with many young children, unaccompanied children and other Persons with Specific Needs (PSNs).
The Protection Assistant actively looks out for and help to identify any PSNs or individuals that appear to require greater care and attention, and in doing so provide them with all reassurances and explain the purpose of the DRIVE. As necessary the Protection Assistant also assist a vulnerable individual through the process, assuring them of the confidential nature of the information that they provide in response to the questions that will be asked by NADRA.
The Protection Assistant encourage the concerned refugee family and/or individual family members to provide the fullest possible information in response to the questions that are of a sensitive nature. The Protection Assistant liaises closely with CAR staff to ensure the timely identification of PSNs for any immediate support that they require during the DRIVE. This includes ensuring that such persons are prioritized by NADRA and that any additional on-site care and attention is provided.
The Protection Assistant also conduct initial urgent protection interviews of needy individuals - in accordance with the UNHCR Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
The Protection Assistant respond to refugees\' questions regarding the DRIVE procedures in the centres and the follow-up process for collecting their Smartcards, and impressing upon them the importance of ensuring they visit the PCMs (after the DRIVE is concluded) whenever they have a change in circumstances that will require their information/profile to be updated in the NADRA database.
The Protection Assistant assist UNHCR in monitoring the DRIVE activities and recording overall progress at the registration centre(s) where they are assigned. She also prepares and submit a daily situation report to their UNHCR supervisor and debrief on any issues and aspects of the process that require corrective action and/or further attention. The daily reports focus on protection issues including individual cases that may require immediate follow-up action by the concerned UNHCR office in Karachi or Islamabad.
The Protection Assistant also perform other DRIVE-related duties as requested by their supervisor.

My first international paper was accepted by NGO Forum on Asian Development Bank in back 2012. I was offered to attend 15 days Internship at ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines. I learned monitoring techniques, improved my reporting skills and got orientation on ADB work in Pakistan.
