The assistant ensures compliance with sterilization and infection control protocols, maintains cleanliness and readiness of surgical environments, and actively participates in inventory management of instruments and medical equipment. This role requires a careful, attentive approach to patient identification and safety procedures to support successful surgical outcomes. The Operation Room Assistant works closely with the surgical team, hospital staff, and patients, requiring excellent communication and teamwork abilities. The role demands someone with a diploma in operating room assistance, at least one to two years of experience, and practical knowledge of medical equipment and basic life support. There is a strong emphasis on adherence to procedures, accurate documentation, and immediate reporting of any incidents to supervisory personnel. While this position does not supervise a team, it demands responsibility, reliability, and a sharp focus on maintaining a safe, sterile operating environment.
Responsibilities

  • Prepare the operating theatre for surgical procedures by ensuring all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are ready and properly sterilized.
  • Provide surgical staff with essential items such as gowns, gloves, and surgical instruments promptly during procedures.
  • Arrange and inspect medical equipment like suction devices and microscopes to ensure proper working order before surgeries.
  • Maintain cleanliness and a sterile environment in the operation theatre to prevent any contamination or infection.
  • Assist in the safe and efficient transfer of patients to and from the operating table, observing all safety protocols.
  • Verify and confirm patient demographics prior to surgery to ensure accurate identification and prevent errors.
  • Assist with surgical counts to ensure all instruments and materials are accounted for before, during, and after surgery.
  • Handle and preserve biopsy tissue samples properly and ensure their timely and secure transfer to laboratories.
  • Complete charge sheets accurately and enter relevant data promptly after procedures are completed.
  • Report any incidents or irregularities immediately to the matron or officer in charge to maintain operational safety.
  • Strictly apply and maintain sterilization techniques and infection control protocols throughout all activities.
  • Listen carefully and follow instructions from medical staff to effectively support surgical procedures.
  • Perform any additional tasks assigned by the line manager related to the operation theatre functions.
